The scammers claimed they could provide the following services:
1. Cruise fare for two (2) passengers in an ADA-accessible cabin with vacation protection.
2. Two (2) roundtrip airline tickets to and from Miami, accommodating a motorized wheelchair.
3. Roundtrip ground transportation for passengers and a motorized wheelchair to and from airports.
They quoted a total of $5,955.98 for these services, which they said would be charged in two transactions:
• $3,565.00 (broken into $2,130.00 and $1,435.00) for the cruise fare.
• $2,390.98 for airfare and ground transportation.
The scammers instructed me to call my banking institution to temporarily increase my daily spending limit and verbally approve these transactions. Both charges were processed successfully.
I contacted the scammers to request confirmation of the vacation protection and ground transportation details, as these were missing from my emails. The representative initially claimed I had already received all necessary documentation. After further questioning, they issued a confirmation email for ground transportation, allegedly booked through a vendor called Transfeero, totaling $200.20. Upon reviewing this email, it became clear that the "booking details" section contained only a stock photo pulled
from the internet—a generic image of a Transfeero confirmation rather than legitimate documentation. This unusual and unprofessional response, coupled with inconsistencies in their communication, further heightened my suspicions. Following this interaction, I contacted Carnival Cruise Line’s legitimate guest services department using a verified phone number from their official website. Carnival confirmed the following:
1. Legitimate charge: $2,238 for the cruise fare and vacation protection.
2. Booking origin: Created by an outside entity, not Carnival’s guest care services.
Carnival secured my booking to prevent further unauthorized access, provided instructions to access my booking details online, and confirmed there were no additional charges beyond the $2,238 amount. I then contacted American Airlines, who confirmed:
1. Legitimate charge: $949.90 for two roundtrip tickets ($474.95 per passenger).
2. Steps taken: Similar to Carnival, they secured my reservations to prevent unauthorized access and provided instructions to access my booking details online.
Steps Taken to Address the Fraud:
1. Reported the unauthorized charges to my banking institution and submitted evidence of legitimate and fraudulent
transactions.
2. Secured bookings with the real Carnival Cruise Line and American Airlines to prevent further misuse of my
personal information.
3. Gathered and provided all supporting documentation, including:
o Listing from my bank statement highlighting fraudulent charges.
o Itemized receipts from Carnival Cruise Line and American Airlines.
o Correspondence with the scammers.
