Online Travel Booking Scam Reports & Reviews (3)

- Philadelphia, PA, USA • Sep 23, 2024

Secured a vacation via booksi, but when called to book, redirected to a business called Monster Reservations (mywebrez.com). Upsold with 1 additional national and international vacation ($299) that was not made clear as a separate charge. Finally, the support tech booked me with a different hotel that was an additional $500 to what was spent already when using booksi ($114) so a total of $1,000 lost.

This company is a travel agency. My mom needed to call a specific airline to book a plane ticket because the travel group she was registered to travel with didn't have any plane tickets left at the travel group price. She went online thinking she was calling the airline directly when instead she was directed into a link for this company. She called the number (thinking it was directly to the airline) and they offered her a price that was almost 2x the price available on the internet for each plane ticket. My mom is a senior citizen with limited travel experience and has never booked a plane ticket before. She was feeling extreme pressure by the agent to book as she need these specific flights and there were "only a few flights left" for travel she was booking in February but calling for in July. She ended up booking the tickets for an amount that was much higher than internet price. This company price gouged her and took advantage of her. She told the company several times that she wanted to talk to her husband before the purchase but they just kept pressuring and going back to the "supervisor" to get random (and I am sure fake based on the business practices observed thus far) discounts to keep her going.

She didn't lose money because I talked to her 4 hours after she made the purchase and without looking at anything knew the price paid was way to high for the itinerary (i.e. price gouging). Therefore, I called the company and complained about the price gouging. They offered to rebook at internet pricing (i.e. almost half the price they original charged for the tickets). I asked them to cancel instead. Later, I looked at the credit card statement and saw two transations. I am assuming one was for the commission and one was for the plane ticket. Based on the internet pricing versus the plane ticket price, it appears (but I can't say for 100% certainty), the airline would also pay a commission of a few hundred dollars to the agency. So this agency was looking to get 1. commission from the airline and 2. Commission (huge, huge, huge) commission from a senior citizen for booking this ticket. In my opinion, this is price gouging and taking advantage of the elderly and/or internet illiterate.

Googled on 8/11/2023 looking for American Airlines and their number popped up. 844-837-1400. I thought I was actually talking to American Airlines. I had a death in the family so needed to make airline reservations to attend funeral. I told them where I wanted to travel to, and they booked the reservations- asked for my account number including the 3 digits on the back of my card and my home address. During the booking, they told me that they are sending me an email to verify the name spelling on the reservation. I must type agree if the spelling is correct. After I completed the booking, and being able to review the entire email I realized it was Flightsassist and not American Airlines, I was being charged 1764.50 for 2 airline tickets and 531.47 non refundable booking fee. I was shocked. I am tech savvy and know how to book a ticket myself. I called the rep Nancy from Flightsassist 3x and requested she cancel the reservation. She told me she would cancel my reservation but will not refund me the booking fee . She told me that she would cancel the booking and send me an email but that never happened. At 11.30pm that same day, 8/11 I decided to call American myself and they told me how to cancel my booking that Flightsassist did. The booking was never cancelled by Flightsassist even though I requested that they do so several times. Earlier that day I went to my bank since I used my bank debit card to make the transaction, I told them what happened and they told me they would cancel my card and re-issue me a new one
