Scam Description
I received an email from Indeed.com, which I had signed up to for employment opportunities. I found the posting on Indeed.com and applied for it. I was contacted by a person (Michael Cole) claiming to be HR, he said that they received my application for the Staff Quality Evaluator Position being offered on indeed. I was told that I had been selected and that if I was interested to provide them with my age, sex, address, phone and current employer. I was told I'd be given $300 for each assignment I completed (secret shopper) Plus $100 for expenses.
I emailed back and forth with "mr. Cole" and spoke with him on the phone ( I thought it strange that the person in Nova Scotia would have a thick indian accent, as rural Nova Scotia is not overly multicultural)
I did receive a package by UPS with my assignment and a cheque for $3,800 which I was to deposit in scotiabank and verify that they adhered to banking standards of making 80% available immediately. (which I also found to be unlikely, as Canadian banks are only required to make $100 available.
I did deposit the cheque and withdrew $100. I later received a notice from my bank that my account was overdrawn, and when I called them I learned that the cheque was a forgery.
I am not sure how the scammers planned to make money from this, except maybe they were going to contact me and request the balance of the money back, (it never got that far.) I should have noticed the small discrepancies. They were based in N.S. and their "client" (access D Solutions, supposedly in mississauga, yet the UPS parcel came from North York, had the sender's name misspelled).
