A minority youth came on my porch and engaged me in a conversation about him working his way out of the ghetto. I had some time to spare so I took as much of his as possible. His pitch was disjointed but I wrote a check for $40.00 and figured the kid was at least off the street (that day) and showed no signs of intoxication. I dove in to his entirely improbable hard luck family history and kept leading him into his next trail of BS. As I wrote the check, it became obvious he was filling in the receipt illegibly and struggled to repeat his name ,or even sign it or spell it. Heer it is 6 months later and I finally got around to tracking the transaction, but no traceability was left, including phone, fax, email, etc. Wonder what became of "Kelin", who got stuck combining Kevin and Kelvin while starting to crack. I figure the price to witness this scam was worth the 1 1/2 hrs. of our time as entertainment expense...at least for me.

A very polite young man came to the door offering an incredibly overpriced magazine subscription but said it was for training and to help underprivileged urban youth. He was thirsty and hot and seemed desperate so I couldnt resist cause it would have made me seem like a heartless rich lady. Im not rich nor heartless . I just live in a nice part of town and work very hard for my money. I guess i paid for my own guilt trip ticket. To make matters worse 2 months later there are no magazines arriving. SCAMMMM

Door to door sales for magazines for children. High pressure sale to company that misrepresented a product and called it a donation to child literacy. Discovered on web that they are a scam after spouse wrote a check for $108.00.

A Woman Came To My Door With A Guy With Tattoos all over his face , asking me if I could put $1000000 on her child's tuition, and I was willing after the tragic stories They've given me. So I wrote two checks to them personally for 432 apiece to complete they're day. So after they leave i send them to my neighbor and she spends as well don't know how much, so as I see them leave I walked over to speak with her and she should me her receipt and and I asked if she had given both of them something, so she said no just one check to a company. They had me make it out to them personally ? It's a scam I don't care how sad of a story they tell. It's fake and I suggest everyone call 911 to get them out of the neighborhood immediately they are no good I have been investigating them for a while

Optimum Reader Services IS A SCAM! Door-to-door magazine subscription sales people (in this case a young Black woman) knock on your door AFTER BUSINESS HOURS SO WE COULDN'T CHECK WITH CITY HALL TO SEE IF THIS WAS LEGIT. She had a smooth talking delivery and very highly scripted presentation about helping single mothers and children in homeless shelters...********!!! This is a scam, pure and simple. I should have been smart enough to know it was a scam when she said cash or check, they don't take credit cards! God, what an [censored]! Oh, yeah, one more thing, they TARGET ELDERS, I'm 70 years old!

I did some on-line research and I found nothing but scam notices about this company and a bogus website that never loaded. I got snookered but maybe you can learn from my mistake. I plan to cancel the check first thing tomorrow.

Be careful, monitor your bank account daily. Same happened to me (I stopped payment on the check within an hour of the transaction. 3 days later, they accessed my checking account (from the number on the check) for an ACH debit of over $1000. Debit was paid to PROG COUNTY MUT INS PREM. TOTAL SCAM!

A young black man came to my door dressed in a white shirt and tie adn asked me if I believe in 2nd chances.

I told him yes and he went on to give me a sob story on how he was trying to earn a 2nd chance selling magazine subscriptions and that he would earn points and a commission. The list of magazines was out dated and extremely overpriced. $336 plus $20 P.H. for a toal of $356 for 6 magazines for 1 year subscription. I felt bad for the young man and wrote him a check for $356 in my mind as a donation to a charity.

After further reasearch and trying to reach their bogus web site, I realized that this was a complete scam! Fortunately I was able to stop payment on my check! I did unfortunately give the young man my phone number, personal email and home address but thankfully no credit card # or SS#.

A man came to my door selling magazines - saying this company helps lifts people like himself out of poverty. His sales will help provide for his family etc. We always try to do good to others. Even though he did not seem convincing to know the products we just made a sale to help him. He brough an out of date brochure of magazines and every purchase helps his sales. Went on and on about how he does this for his family. Me and my husband purchases a magazine just to help him out. Turns out he makes fraudulent checks with the one we gave (3 fraudulent checks) - the company does not pick up the phone. It continiously just goes to voicemail.

A few months ago (April 2019) I was living in California and Mr. Lyndon George, dealer n. 77, showed up at my house on behalf of Optimum Reading Services LLC saying that he was selling subscriptions to magazines to support himself and his 5 year old daughter. He said the organization was helping people like him to get back on their feet again. He gave me a yellow slip with my order on it that said 'no donations' and seemed pretty legitimate.

In an attempt to do the right thing and help him out, I bought a subscription to Mad Magazine for kids with a check for 60 dollars.

Needless to say, I never saw a copy, neither my money back. Despite various faxes, I cannot even reach them anymore on the phone.

Obviously a scam. I am just sorry that once again honest people trying to help out someone 'in need' are taken for a ride, thus damaging real charities.

There were several red flags about my interaction with a door-to-door magazine salesman that represented *** *** *** *** that knocked on my door at around 8pm on a Thurs. night.

1. Unprofessional presentation of materials: Immediately I knew the person at my door was not working for a legitimate charity. No fliers, no binder of images, no logos of the charity, no business cards--nothing symbolizing an official business, just a half-assed website and phone number. Charity information was presented in a folded up, laminated paper and appeared very old, stained, and crumbled

2. Unnecessarily complicated presentation of cost: Cost of a subscription was way too complex. The salesman needed to multiply number of mags by number of months by number points. You were paying for "experience points (?)" and no cost was clearly laid out. Obviously designed to be overly confusing.

3. Check was the only method of payment: no cash, no online payment, no credit card. It had to be check because of a "commission" for the salesman--which made no sense. A sale is a sale and a reputable company would compensate their employees for their work.

4. Illegitimate online presence: about 6-7 sources attributes *** *** *** *** as an illegitimate business. Read many complaints that refunds were difficult to get, magazines were never received, and contact with the company was difficult. The website is far from polished, no ability to pay online, no images of the charity involvement, no LinkedIn profile, they are not found in charity databases, and I could NOT find information about the charity the salesman described on the website. Very questionable.

5. Lengthy, difficult refund process: Read the ScamPulse.com complaints and responses from the company. In most cases refunds were difficult to get, with a lengthy wait time, and spotty contact. It shouldn't take a comment on the ScamPulse.com to convince a legitimate company to expedite refunds.

Please connect the dots if this occurs to you and do not give them your money.
