I wanted to purchase a vehicle, and, after discussing it with the dealer, who is also the owner, I sent a $2000 dollar deposit. The dealer then sent me a receipt for the transfer and a statement outlining the final cost etc. I noticed a $900 charge for Motor vehicle safety certificate. The list price of the vehicle was $15,489, and after my initial deposit he sent me a receipt for the deposit and the following statement. Remaining balance $16,632.64 / Licensing fee is extra. When I questioned the amount he said they need to do this inspection, which as far as I'm concerned is a regular vehicle safety inspection. But no, this is a must-have for his dealership to sell the vehicle. According to him without this certificate the vehicle can not be registered. I said I would get permits and buy the car to London and have my mechanic do the inspection. He would not agree, saying that if I did that he would have to void the warranty. I have called several dealerships regarding this cost and nobody knows what he is talking about. My opinion is: Either he just wanted to score some extra profit, or: There is a problem with the vehicle that he has not disclosed and he wants to use the $900 to repair ir without my consent or knowledge. My advice is to either stay away from this dealership, or be extremely cautious when dealing with them.
