They were responsive - provided a lease. Given that it was a short term lease, I wasn't surprised they required a deposit and upfront (same goes on VRBO/etc) - but bank transfer didn't work (they use some shady online bank I guess). I stupidly agreed to use cashapp - again, I was moving quickly and not thinking.
After having an issue completing the rest of the payment I called the office line, the call was redirected (sounded like an international call) to a man who called himself "Andy James" - though he had a very thick accent. I knew then I'd been had.
On closer investigation it looks like they've been running this scam across the country. I was obviously not careful enough - but hopefully others can avoid my mistake.

I tried to get back in touch with both the realtor/manager and the tenant regarding the apartment I was leasing for February and March. This comes after my friend was supposed to move, only to find that the number was disconnected and there is no record of any such people or agreements that the building has on record.
Itemized evidence of the fraud are as follows: 1. Direct contact via phone is disconnected. 2. I called the company's main office as listed online and they hung up without offering an explanation or solution. 3. The "le[censored]der" mailed an EMPTY envelope via USPS without the hard copy of the lease as a means to fool PayPal’s mail tracking trigger. 4. I spoke to the building and they don’t have anyone listed under either of Andy James (the broker), Outbox HRM (the company), or Katherine Jennings (the supposed tenant), and that the apartment in question is not listed for subleasing.
