Type of a scam Employment
I recently applied for a remote position as a Copyediting/Administrative Assistant position with Outlaw Off Road & 4x4 after seeing a job posting on ZipRecruiter. The company appeared legitimate at first, and I received an offer letter outlining job expectations and terms. After signing the letter, I engaged in further communication with a representative who claimed to be my supervisor. They emphasized that equipment necessary for the position, including a computer, would be provided at no cost to me. I was informed that an assigned vendor would ship the equipment, and the funds for the purchase would be sent to me via a company-issued paycheck.
Shortly after signing the offer, I was sent an invoice for the equipment with my address listed. This raised concerns, as I had never agreed to pay for or manage any purchases. When I contacted the company directly through their official contact information, they confirmed that the job offer and all associated communications were fraudulent and not connected to their organization.
Key Red Flags Noticed
• The company stated I would need to deposit a company-issued check to facilitate payment for the equipment.
• The job description and offer included vague terms and promises, particularly around flexibility and compensation.
• The representatives repeatedly avoided providing clear answers about hours of work, overtime policies, or the return process for equipment.
• An invoice for equipment was sent without my consent or authorization.
Resolution and Actions Taken
Upon realizing the scam, I ceased all communication with the scammers and notified the legitimate company, who confirmed it was a fraud. I also did not deposit any checks or share any financial details, but I did provide my mailing address.
As this scam was well-orchestrated and used the guise of a legitimate job offer, I am filing this report to help prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes.
