On Wednesday, 3/6/19 I called this number listed as PayPal customer service on google: 1 (888) 942-4603?
When I called, I got the normal, automated PayPal prompt, informing me about IRS and tax help, etc. I was then connected to what I was told was the disputes department, and that they would handle my case. The purpose of the call was to simply remove one bank card connected to my account and keep the other bank account listed. I’d tried this several times online before, but would get an error message stating I had pending transactions and it could not be done. I spoke with an agent, Park, who told me my account had been hacked, and that I had $12,000 pending as a withdrawal from PayPal, hence the error message. Park read to me my last 5 PayPal transactions, all correct, confirming my account. He then stated the only way to prove it was me using the account would be go to a local store, purchase Google Play gift cards and allow them to ping my location through the system using my linked bank cards. I would need to immediately go to a Kroger to purchase the cards. I’d get the cards, read him the numbers and wait for the signal while in the parking lot. Every time we did this, there would be a “disruption” and I would have to purchase more cards. After hours I told them I needed to go back to work and that could not continue. They told me I would not get my money back and they could not stop the $12K transaction until a successful transaction went through; we would need to resume on Thursday.
On Thursday, 3/7/2019 I called (888) 221-1161, the correct PayPal customer service number, twice - at 9:15am and again at 9: 55am. My call was again intercepted by these hackers. We resumed the transactions. I ended up spending $16,600 in Google play gift cards – all to prove my identity. This is in addition to the $350 overdraft fee on my account that I encored by PayPal continuing to draw money from the card I did not have set as “Preferred” and could not manually remove – again, the purpose of the call. The scammers told me I would be compensated for every gift card I purchased, as well as the refund for every card. After Kroger no longer allowed me to purchase, I was told to go to Whole Foods. Not a single refund on my account yet. They gave me this case ID: PayPal Case ID - arf327645597
This was the direct line to call them if we got disconnected: 1 (844) 518-0111 where I spoke with Vijay and Jason. The number they called me from when we got disconnected: 1 (888) 720-0333. The disconnection would happen frequently, as there would be static on the phone and they would not be able to hear me on the other side. They convinced me these were the hackers that had intercepted my account also intercepting the call so that we could not get this resolved.
On Friday, 3/8/19, I used the PayPal chat function to get an update. I spoke with Erik, and was told this was a scam; PayPal would never have me make purchases to clear a hacker on my account or verify identity.
I have a police report with Atlanta Police Department, a report with the FBI and a report with Federal Trade Commission.
Attached is photo evidence of account and phone records. I was able to speak with someone in PayPal’s fraud department who told me that they would investigate, but that they “absolutely would not refund the money.” When a long time customer is desperate for some resolve to handle a situation being scammed out of that much money, patience and sensitivity to the situation help. The fact is none of this would have happened if I were actually able to delete the card from my account myself on the website, and if the primary number for a reputable company like PayPal was correctly listed on Google. It is also unnerving that the scammers were able to access all of my recent transactions. I’m willing to cooperate in any way to help track down these scammers because I need all of my money returned. I also want to help prevent this from happening to anyone else; the level of frustration and terror this provokes is unimaginable.
