Type of a scam Tech Support
On Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at about 11:45 am eastern standard day light time, my wife was using Microsoft edge internet browser to look up a recipe for black-eyed peas. She typed black-eyed pea recipe in the search bar and hit enter. She clicked on the icon for southern black-eyed peas recipe by Txbluebonnet web site www.africanbites.com/black-eyed-peas-recipe . Instead of the web page opening, a window opened that covered the entire screen. A very loud audio message started playing that said Microsoft has detected that someone has illegally accessed your network, so we will have to lock your computer. Do not attempt to shut your computer down or you will lose all your files and data. Call the number on the screen to speak to a Microsoft technician to correct the problem. This message was repeated continuously and there were no options on the screen to close the window. I have Trend Micro antivirus software installed on my computer, so I thought I was protected. The number on the screen was 1-833-775-5383. I called the number and the person that answered said his name was Kevin Jacob. He said he was a Microsoft technician. He told me his help line phone number was 1-855-554-2111 ext. 1208. He said he could be reached between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm. I asked him what do I need to do to correct this problem? He said that Microsoft felt that a trojan horse had gotten pass my antivirus software. He gave me a code to type into the dialog box that appeared on the screen. After getting access to my desktop computer, he brought a dialog box up on the screen that appeared to show someone from Russia had accessed my network. I again asked him what do I need to do to correct the problem? He said that Microsoft recommends purchasing advanced network firewall security which is certified by Microsoft through PC Network Care. The address that he brought up on the screen was: PC Network Care, 875 Alumni Way, Jacksonville Fl. 32246. I asked him how much does this cost? He said $299 per year for the basic package. He said the cost for the standard package which would be a one-time pay, last forever and transferable would be $599. He said the standard package would protect all devices connected to the network. He said this was certified by Microsoft. I told him that I would purchase the standard package and gave him my credit card information. He said he would have to transfer me to another Microsoft technician to get the advanced network firewall security set-up on my computer. Another person came on the line and said he was a Microsoft technician and would be installing the security software on my computer. He said it would take about ½ hour. After he was finished installing the software, he said it would be saved on my computer under PC Network Care. He said the total cost would be $599 for the forever security software, $158 for the technical service plus taxes. The over- all total cost would be $799. He said the order number is 1QDS80QUQ0Y. He said the billing would show up on my credit card statement as Nexway ([email protected] head office Nexway, Inc. 236 8th street Suite C. San Francisco, Ca 94103 United States). I asked him, how do I get rid of the window on my computer with the load audio message from Microsoft? He said he would transfer me back to Kevin and he would take care of it. This person named Kevin came back on the line and said now that you have advanced network firewall security installed on your computer, he would be able to remove the message from Microsoft. After about a minute, the message was removed. Kevin said he was a Microsoft technician and once again gave me the phone number where he could be reached (1-855-554-2111 ext. 1208). Kevin said someone would call me tomorrow to verify that everything is working correctly.
Later in the day I felt that something just didn’t seem right about this situation. The next day, April 11, 2019, I googled Microsoft phone number on my cell phone. A web site that said Onesupport/Microsoft came on the screen. I called the phone number for Onesupport/Microsoft, which was 1-877-806-1372. They are located at 350 Barner Dr. #109 San Marcos, Tx. 78666. I asked the lady that answered the phone, are you Microsoft? She said yes. I asked her does Microsoft lock your computer and then display a web page with an audio message because Microsoft detected that someone had accessed your network? She said no. I explained to her about what went on with Kevin Jacob and pc network care. She said that is malware and the people who claimed to be Microsoft technicians are the people who were able to get pass my antivirus protection. She said instead of protecting my computer, they probably added more malware to steal and sell my personal information. She said that Onesupport/Microsoft could remove the malware and anything else that this other company placed on my computer and give me one year of technical support for $320.87. She said it would be about $40 more if I wanted to add a second computer. She said they would install Avira antivirus to protect my computer. I agreed to let Onesupport/Microsoft remotely access my computer and remove the malware. I told her that I would have to evaluate things before I give them access to my second computer since it was not infected with malware.

The same day April 11, 2019 after Onesupport/Microsoft had finished their task, I called my credit card company which is Capital One. I explain to them what had happened with pc network care and Nexway. I told them that I would not pay the $799 that would be charged by Nexway. At about 12:41 pm I had received a phone call from phone number 888-771-4537 but I didn’t answer because I was on the phone with Onesupport/Microsoft. At 5:08 pm I received another call from phone number 888-771-4537. I answered the phone and the lady on the other end said she was from pc network care and was calling to see if everything was going okay with my computer. I told her that I felt that you people are running a scam. I told her that I had already called my credit card company and told them not to pay the $799 charged to my account by Nexway. I told her that I had another company remove the malware that your technicians placed on my computer. She said that they were certified Microsoft technicians but since I had already called my credit card company, they would not charge me or call me again. The next day, April 12, 2019, I received a credit for $799 from Nexway on my credit card account.
On Saturday April 13, 2019, I turned my computer on and visited a few web sites. When I logged off and tried to shut my computer down, it would not turn off. I had to hold the on/off button down to shut it down. At about 5:33 pm, I called phone number 1-877-806-1372 to speak with a Onesupport/Microsoft technician. I told the guy who answered the phone that my computer would not shut down. I asked him are you guy’s Microsoft technicians because I see different phone numbers for Onesupport on the internet? He would not give me a direct answer. I told him that I would not be giving them access to my second computer and wanted to cancel my subscription. He said he would have to transfer me to another department because he was not authorized to cancel subscriptions. I waited on the phone for a while and decided to hang up. At 5:43 pm, I received a return phone call from phone number 512-707-3102 which was from Austin, Tx. The person on the phone said he was from Onesupport/Microsoft. He said since I never granted them access to make changes to my second computer, they would refund the amount that I was charged. He said since they did work on my other computer and removed the malware, they could not refund that amount. He said since I wanted to cancel my subscription, I would still have one year of technical support, but it just would not be automatically renewed but canceled at the end of the subscribed year.
On Monday April 15, 2019, I received a credit of $51.36 to my credit card account from Onesupport/Microsoft.
Since I don’t have anything important on my computer, to be safe I’ve decided to scrap it. I will buy a new computer and up-grade my internet security. It seems that the people who work for the internet antivirus software companies are the ones who are infecting consumers computers with malware because they have the skill to get around your antivirus protection.
