Pedicab Scam - Inflated Charges Reports & Reviews (1)

On 9 July, 2023, I took what was thought to be a legit NYC pedicab from Zara Store 5th Ave to Penn station. 5th Ave #666, New York, NY 10103. Driver quoted $1 per minute. It took 13 min, and he said, “I’ll charge $12.” Started ride at 6:52pm and arrived at station at 7:05. Insisted I pay via Square. As I wasn’t looking at his iPhone screen, he typed 127.30. Square only works with vendors, so they told me to call bank. I did, but bank requires receipt to file dispute and reverse charges. I found my receipt by looking up Square transactions, but there is no option given to contest the charge. I found online article exposing these false “pedicab” scammers, and article described nearly verbatim my personal experience! The cyclist is from Kazikstan, young, maybe in his 20’s, average weight/height. Dark hair. Thick accent. I took selfie vid but only managed to get the back of his head. There was no qualifying information listed in the cab - no number, no meter, nothing written at all. I don’t have any further info. I am a tourist. He took advantage and he knows my hands are tied! PLEASE help me?? He is running an airtight scam, so was able to submit to my bank whatever necessary docs they required, as they reversed the credit they’d temporarily provided. My hands are tied. I’m giving you and bank all I have! 127.30 is a lot to me.
