Second hand piano offered for free claiming it belonged to a dead spouse and wanted a good home but needed to pay movers fees.

Email chain here:

From 24 November

I sincerely apologize for the delayed response; I’ve been occupied with parking.

I've spoken with the movers, the representative recommended that you connect with an agent through the live chat on their website at https://www.nationalamericanlogistics.com to initiate the reroute. Provide the Referral ID: KP23101DWF and mention that Dr Katherine referred you. Please keep me posted on how things progress with the movers. I’d also appreciate it if you could take a few pictures once the piano arrives at your home and send them to me.

? Dear Katherine,

Very much hope to hear from you today. Just combining my two emails of yesterday.

Firstly, Thank you for what feels like an incredibly generous offer. Incredibly generous.

We are so touched by this gesture of you wanting to keep the music playing and accessible to the youth. I am really delighted you are interested in us taking custody of your piano.

We feel it would be prudent to have one of our musicians just come by and briefly play it if possible - before we arrange to move forward and pay the movers to deliver. I don’t want to make a problem for you, as i’m sure you have many things to organise, but we would like to test it very much before committing.

Would this be possible? We could visit the movers facility perhaps?

Also for your movers information

- please tell them our double front doors 60” wide total, and ask them if the legs come off to get it in side ways?!

Model: M ( Medium)

Year: 2006

Serial number 574706.

If you're interested in it.

Could you please share your address and phone number so I can pass it along to them to plan the route and calculate the cost? I also want to inform you that they require payment before delivery, as it's their policy to collect payment upfront to cover expenses related to disassembling and assembling the piano, delivery, and insurance. The charges should be minimal since I've already covered the main costs, you’ll only need to pay the difference.

Dear Katherine,

I am very so sorry for your loss, which was so recently and I wanted to give our warm wishes to you and respect for getting things organised so fast.

Before being able to comment and ask you to speak to your movers, are you able to give

me a little more on the model, as we have a size issue and am concerned what you have which I think is a full Grand - may be too big without us removing windows.

If you can give me the model I can check the size on the internet.

Warm wishes for your evening, ****

Hello ****, Thank you for your interest in the piano. The Steinway belonged to my late husband, who played it as recently as February before his passing. While I’m in the process of moving my belongings, I know my husband, with his deep love and attachment to the instrument, wouldn’t have wanted it to be sold. I’m hoping to pass it on to someone who shares his passion for music and has a genuine love for the piano.

The first person I had in mind unfortunately didn’t follow through, and since I don’t intend to sell it, the piano is currently with the movers handling my relocation. However, if you’re interested, I can try to arrange for the movers to reroute it to you. It shouldn’t incur too much additional cost, as the distance can be covered within a day or two.

Please let me know if you would like me to reach out to the movers. Just so you know, the piano is in excellent condition,it’s far from being something discarded or wasted

Summary: We are looking to give a loved piano a good home surrounded by art and appreciation.

Dear Katherine,

I have been past your address by someone on facebook where your piano was advertised.

My name is **** ***** and I am working with ***** *********, owner of ******** Gallery of **********. ***** has been in business here in D.C. since 1973 and during the summer we repainted and rehung the three story corner property on P Street and have started hosting some charity fundraising events within the gallery spaces.

We have been borrowing key boards and pianos which are then played by professional musicians and piano students from Howard University.

We have been inspired to find a piano to live with us after taking advice from a wonderful pianist called Dr ******* ******** (a nice story here if you can access instagram).

***** and I also have two young children who are nearly old enough to learn, and hope we will also be able to use this instrument to bring music into their lives.

My contact details are below (we are currently setting up a new website and emails hence my using my personal email).

I am very happy to speak on the phone or invite you to the gallery to see the space. If we were to move forward - we would want to visit the instrument with one of our regular student musicians to just check it out - as you know, specialist moving costs for such an instrument are significant and we have to be certain it will fit (!) and work for us.

If you google @lenfantgallery instagram you can see more images of the spaces. The size would depend if we can get it up the stairs or not.

Very much look forward to hearing from you,

Yamaha Baby Grand Piano Donation

Shared on facebook "Free Baby Grand Steinway." Told me his wife died, wanted someone to have his baby grand piano for free to honor her memory. He seemed genuine and we texted back and forth several times, where he failed to honor my request to come play the piano first before talking to a mover to make arrangements. He didn't answer any specific questions, and finally directed me to a shipping website that and provide a code to pay for rerouting. I told him he was a scam artist and he cursed at me. :-)

Emailed about donating a Yamaha baby grand piano that was their late spouse’s. Asked to pay for the shipping costs

- Moscow, ID, USA • Sep 06, 2024

We received the following email through the prayer request portal on our church website: Name: Mary Murgia Email: [email protected] Phone: 2814894803

Message: Hello, I trust this message finds you well. I am currently seeking a new home for my late husband's Yamaha baby grand piano, and I am hoping to place it in the hands of a passionate individual who will appreciate and care for this exquisite instrument. If you or someone you know is interested in providing a loving and dedicated home for this piano, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Warm regards, Mary Murgia

After several email exchanges, I asked if she was selling the piano or giving it away to which she sent the following response: Thanks for your response. The Yamaha Baby Grand Piano GC1 model used to be owned and played by my husband who passed away last year. The dimensions are 151cm by 146cm. It was last tuned sometime last year before he passed. The piano is about 2 years old and in impeccable condition. I'm relocating and don't think my husband would be happy if I sold this piano. At the same time, I am moving to a home with less space, so I'm hoping to give it to someone who is a passionate lover of the instrument. I didn't want to leave it alone in an empty house. The piano is currently in storage with the movers I hired to move my properties. The movers can deliver anywhere. However, the beneficiary has to pay the moving costs. In the attachment are pictures of the piano. I look forward to your reply if you are interested; if not, I can contact someone else. Regards, Mary Murgia Clothed in Christ

I responded and asked for the info of the moving company. I then emailed the moving company and gave them the address to which I received the following response:

Thank you for reaching out regarding the delivery of Mrs. Mary Murgia's baby grand piano to (OUR ADDRESS HERE). We appreciate the opportunity to assist you with this relocation. We acknowledge the reference code TEIL132JJJ and have noted the details regarding the piano and its intended delivery location. Regarding the delivery, the standard costs for our delivery options are as follows: • 3-Day Delivery: $750 • 6-Day Delivery: $550 • 9-Day Delivery: $350

Additionally, we offer the following payment options for your convenience: 1. PayPal 2. Bank Transfer 3. Zelle 4. Venmo

Please let us know your preferred payment method, and we will provide you with the necessary details to proceed with the transaction.

Looking forward to your response. Best regards, John Smith Client Relations Delivery Department | Tim Moving

Something about the wording led me to question, so I visited the website which looked like a legit site. So, I copied and pasted the original email from "Mary" and did a Google search and landed here.

They were pushy. They would not provide additional information about the piano such as year it was manufactured. They were rude at the thought of trying out the instrument before paying to have it moved. They insisted I try their moving company and gave the fake number which I looked up first and found here on BBB.

The person reached out through our "contact us" form on our church website. They identified themselves as Mrs. Barabara Williams, who recently lost her musician husband. She wanted to donate her baby grand piano to our church as a free will donation. I reached out to her via my work email. She shared photo's and measurements. This whole experience felt a little unbelievable, yet at the same time hard to question. After we indicated our interest she shared the information regarding the moving company who would deliver the piano. The only cost we would carry was for moving delivery. It was at this point when I decided to Google the moving company because I wanted to make sure she was at least located in the same state. I quickly noticed that the website, even though it seemed legit had some lacking information. I added the words "baby grand piano" to my search and found another ScamPulse.com scam report of a similar story just with a different name. Though, it was still through TIM Moving company. Fortunately we caught this before any real information was traded, other than what is already available publicly.

A friend of mine forwarded me a piano being given away on FB Marketplace and when i emailed her she responded - "My sister told me about you, and i would really love to give it to you. I have told her to take it off from the market place since you are interested in taking it…. The Yamaha Piano used to be owned and played by my husband who is now deceased and it was last tuned in March before he passed away. I'm almost done moving my properties and I don't think my husband will be happy if I sell his piano, at the same time I'm not happy seeing it around because of less storage I have in my new house so I'm hoping to give it out to someone who is a passionate lover of the instrument. It's currently with the movers I hired to move my properties from my house.. if you really don't mind making new arrangements with the movers, I can attempt to get in touch with them. This should not attract too many charges since the distance can be recovered within a day..I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but do let me know if you wish that I get through to the movers. Just so you know I'm not giving out a scrap or a waste, it’s in immaculate condition."

I replied that we were interested and she responded right away-" I’m very excited it’s going to a good home. I got through to the movers now in order to let them know they will move the piano back.. All you need to do now is to contact them and make new arrangements as regards to the rerouting process. I also would like you to take some pictures when it arrives at your house and send them to me.. You should present this Referral ID: YGB90JALAS5 to them via live chat on their website at http://duffypianomovers.services to initiate a reroute.. Let them know Rebecca Williams referred you and give me feedback.

I clicked on the link and started a chat with "the movers" they wanted 50% now and were willing to store it for a few months for free. I asked them about the condition of the piano and they said it was pack up already but they sent me pictures that did not match the piano that was advertised. after further searching on google i came upon a post on the ScamPulse.com website of a scam from 4 months prior with the identically worded email even with the same ref ID! Turns out the website was a fake copy of a real moving company

This person approached my church claiming they had a deceased husband's baby grand piano they wanted to give to a music lover. The only fee they would have to pay was shipping from washington dc. They instructed me to make sure I hit the 'family friend button on Paypal. This offered no coverage of transaction. After I paid the delivery fee they told me that I needed to pay for insurance and 3 months of storage fee. Upon emailing the woman who had the piano she claimed that she had paid for 2 months of storage and that 3 months more needed to be covered.

Scammer reached out to us through a "prayer request" portal on our church website. I reached out to the person donating the “Yamaha Baby Grand Piano” and after some email dialogue (in which I expressed and they wanted to hear my desire to play such a “cherished” instrument) received the moving company info. The only way of communicating with them was through email. I reached out to the moving company to get a quote (they wanted the address of our location).

I was beginning to feel weirded out by this experience, so I looked up the moving company’s website (by their email address www.timmoving.com << check them out) and saw a professional yet generic moving company listing. Noticed their address was in Washington DC yet the Google Map couldn’t show the location on the site. I looked the address up and found it was a strip mall in Washington DC with no tenants with the name TIM Moving. I then Googled the donor’s email address and saw the first listing was related to a scam report through the BBB. Also looked up a phone number from the moving company and it too was linked to a scam report through the BBB. Both reports were for the scammers wanting piano moving fees.

Here is the email from the "movers":

Hello Dave Syphers,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the delivery of Mrs. Sophia Thompson's baby grand piano to 1001 SE 60th Ave, Portland, OR 97220. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you with this relocation.

We acknowledge the reference code SEIL132AT and have noted the details regarding the piano and its intended delivery location.

Regarding the delivery, the standard costs for our delivery options are as follows:

6-Day Delivery: $780

9-Day Delivery: $510

Additionally, we offer the following payment options for your convenience:

PayPal

Bank Transfer

Zelle

Venmo

Please let us know your preferred payment method, and we will provide you with the necessary details to proceed with the transaction.

Regarding your request to move the current piano to a different room within the church and then move the piano in that room to your great room, we can certainly accommodate this. There will be an additional fee for the internal relocations, which we can discuss further once you have selected your preferred delivery option.

Looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

John Smith

I saw the free upright Yamaha white piano on FB marketplace. I'd been looking for a piano like that. It said "free" which I didn't really believe, so I clicked on it to find out about it. The facebook person said she was only listing it for her sister who had recently lost her husband. The sister didn't want to "sell it to the highest bidder," but instead wanted to give it to someone who would use it. The sister gave the woman's email address so I could speak to her directly. Her email address was: [email protected]. After some emails back and forth, she said she called the moving company and all I had to do was pay for shipping and to reach out to the company as the piano was already there and packed up. She told me to use the chat option because it was faster. Ultimately, they had me pay through Paypal and told me to be sure to use "friends and family." I sent $450 for moving. That seemed real. Then, they told me they couldn't send it because it hadn't been insured. I could get that. They wanted me to use their insurance person through zelle. I wouldn't. Finally tried Venmo and I couldn't find @Jenny-Bruce. So, back to paypal we went. Again, friends and family. That keeps them from being bound under FB's merchant guarantee. I literally paid $1302 for insurance. I know better than this. My dog had just died in my arms and I had been so mentally cloudy for 3 days that it never occurred to me how ridiculous this was. It wasn't until I told a friend and he said it sounded like a scam. At that exact moment, I realized it had to have been. All the weird pieces fell into place.

I never received a tracking number, the piano listing on Facebook Market place chat was changed to my name-piano with their profile deleted. I do have some screenshots of the "website" chat.
