Type of a scam Tech Support
1. When I was trying to clear up email in my hotmail inbox, the system not only deleted all of it, but purged my entire inbox. When I went to the Deleted tab, it would not allow me to move any deleted messages to the inbox.
2. I googled “Hotmail contact” or “contact Hotmail” and I called the first number that came up. 844-641-0027. It was labelled as an Ad, but I thought it was Hotmail.
3. The man who answered (Mike Edwards) said when I asked him to explain how he was associated with Hotmail that he was with a company that “Hotmail” used.
4. I explained the problem and he smoothly told me each step I should take (guiding me to use my computer and tell him what I saw – he knew every step and worked quickly).
5. He said for a fee of at least $99.99 they could recover it. I would also get a one-year of service provided by Picotech LLD. They would create a backup of all of my emails in case I need to recover them again. ( I do not know where this file is). I neither wanted the one-year of service nor the backup; I just wanted my emails back.
6. I said that Hotmail should not charge me for this service and I was upset with Hotmail. He said he understood and would feel the same way, but this is what I needed to do if I wanted to recover the email. He said that servers would clean the purged email after an hour or two, so we need to work quickly.
7. He took control of my computer using Cytrix (GoToAssist), recovered the email in a little over an hour. [I did not retain the 9 digit access code. Cytrix wanted it as they recognize this as fraudulent usage of their system].
8. Then he called back for payment and sent through a contract, directing me to their website. www.pico-tech.us I first asked again for him to explain his relationship to Hotmail, and he repeated the earlier information. Then I believe I typed in the credit card information, but I do not accurately remember – I may have given it to him verbally. They used PayCertify.
9. I was by now late for work, so I didn’t read the contract at the time.
10. He wanted to save for me his contact information (he still had control of the computer), but I saved it myself in a file with other information. He made sure I knew how to contact them: 1 877 263 1012, Mike at extn 301 and Daniel at extn 904.
11. I asked him to solve a problem in my hotmail account, and he couldn’t do it and had no suggestions. This made me suspicious.
12. Later in the evening, I repeated the “Hotmail contact” google search, and the same number did not pop up. No ad popped up at all. [When I searched from my work computer, it popped up and I’ve made a screen shot of it. The phone number is different, though.]
13. I found Microsoft help (down the search page a bit), and chatted with them. They told me that they operate as Microsoft, and Hotmail is now called outlook.com. They do not work with Picotech.
14. No spyware or malware has been detected by my Norton software. I have an appointment to have an IT service look at the computer now.
15. The contract does not indicate a year of service. It says nothing about Hotmail, either.
16. He had/has access to sensitive information in my email account as well as possibly the computer itself.
