I was looking for work from home jobs and saw a job listing for a data entry clerk online. I applied and then received an email from someone named Tom Folixx saying to download the app telegram and message someone named Lauren Daniels about an interview. I sent her a message and she responded and proceeded with an online interview. She asked basic questions having to do with data entry and then after about 20 minutes offered me the position. She stated that it would be $30/hr with benefits Monday through Friday from 9:30-4:30. Then she said she was going to send me a check for money to buy a laptop through a vendor the vendor would install software onto the laptop and then ship it back to me. I deposited the check before I realized this was a scam as their email address said POPO games instead of POGO. Once I made this realization I figured they were going to send me a check that would bounce and then have me send a check to the vendor thus making $4600 dollars from me and leaving my bank account empty. I had already sent the check, but I just waited for it to bounce and moved on with my life and never messaged them back. I suppose I will never know, but I don't want anyone else to be fooled by this. They were smart, quick, and professional which made it very hard to tell.

I was initially contacted by email about a position as a 3D artist for the company, and set up an interview on Telegram. The email and interview seemed really thorough, so I didn't suspect anything at first. I was sent a check for materials, and instructed to forward part of it on zelle, to the "vendor" to get my supplies. When that didn't work, I was told to put it on gift cards and send those instead. That's when I started to feel weird about it, but I didn't look too much into it until after putting a portion of the check on the gift cards. Now that money is gone since their check bounced. The only plus is that I didn't lose as much as I could have, but I'm totally frustrated and upset. But now I know that 1) any remote interviews will be over a video conference, not IM. 2) no company in their right mind will send someone money before going through official documentation/actual legal hiring. 3) companies will never use apps like paypal or zelle, those are only really safe with people you know. And 4) gift cards are a giant red flag, they can't be traced and any company asking you to use them is a scammer. I just really wish I knew this before now.
