Type of a scam Tech Support
On 2/28/23, I was online searching websites for car parts when my computer locked up and a pop-up came onto the screen advising that a Trojan virus was infecting my computer and directing me to call a toll-free number for technical assistance from Microsoft (a company you think you would be able to trust). I called the number in a panic and the technician, whose name I cannot tell you because his accent was too difficult to understand. I was desperate to have virus removed so I gave credit card information and allowed remote access to my computer thinking that I was doing the right thing.
A couple of hours later when my son arrived home, I explained what had happened. He is the IT ******* for the local ******* **** ***** and he immediately took a look at my laptop and ran some scans and told me that the company that I had dealt with was definitely not Microsoft and that they had not terminated their remote access to my computer after supposedly removing the virus. They had also installed phony virus protection software that was absolutely worthless. Luckily my son, because of his IT experience, was able to terminate their remote access. He found no evidence of any virus on my laptop. At that point, I realized I had been the victim of a scam!
Just a couple of weeks later, my wife’s social security number was used to open a fraudulent checking account, savings account and debit card. Her identity had been stolen and since my wife and I are extremely careful with our personal information, we believe her social security number was stolen that day from our tax documents which were saved to the desktop on the laptop which I had been scammed on just a couple of weeks prior.
