Email said “you’ve been selected to be a Secret Shopper for Walmart. You will receive between $350-400 per assignment.” I started getting urgent texts asking if I had cashed the check? The info given when signing up made no mention of being paid in advance. I have been a Secret Shopper before and you do not get paid until you submit the evaluation of the store or restaurant & a copy of the receipt for goods purchased. So I became suspicious when I got texts asking if I had received the check or cashed it yet. When the instructions arrived with the check for $2350, I was very surprised at the large amount. After reading through the instructions I noticed several fishy items. First, the check is supposedly drawn from an Evansville(Indiana) Teacher’s Federal Credit Union. Ask yourself-why would a Teacher’s Union hire people to conduct secret shopper surveys? Second, you are instructed to go cash the check and if not possible, deposit it, then go spend $400 on each gift card purchased at the Wal-Mart. Buy 3 at first store($1200) & 2 more at second store($800). Anyone who’s ever bought a gift card knows that once the 16-digit card number & 4-digit pin ( which is covered in silver foil on the back) has been scratched off, the card cannot be returned, it is “used”. The letter instructs the shopper to scratch off the card & pin number and send a photo of the card(front and back) to the scammer(called the coordinator). You have just given the scammer all he needs to go make on-line purchases at Walmart having the card number & pin. You will be informed by your bank in a day or two that the check was fraudulent and they have deducted the entire amount of $2350 from your account! They tell you to be “very discreet” when doing the transaction...yeah like try and do this scam for us without looking suspicious! I hope these guys go to jail for fraud. The contact on the letter below is Paul Brown at 305-780-5834(that’s who text me) and the man’s name on the envelope w/ck and instructions was Greg Bixler. Don’t fall for it!

I was to send a text or email to 469-437-5711/[email protected] upon receipt of the letter then proceed with my assignment.

My secret shopper assignment is to evaluate my bank in the process of cashing the check received in the amount of $2,890; deduct my pay of $350 and purchase a $20 cashier check made out to the American Cancer Society as the first assignment using $10 to cover purchase charges.

The next assignment was to shop at two (2) Walmart stores spending a total $2,400 on Walmart gift cards ($400 per card) - $1,200 per store and spending $110 shopping ($55 per store) taking note of "vital and useful information". The instructions were to take pictures of the cashiers check and the back of the scratched off Walmart gift cards (revealing all its numbers) then text the information to 469-437-5711.

This is a secret shopper scam that asks you to deposit a check into your bank account, go to Walmart, and buy gift cards with the money. After you buy the gift cards, you would send them a photo of the scratched off gift cards.

I am assuming that once you send them the photos, the check you deposited will bounce and you would have to cover the amount of the gift cards.

I thought this was in conjunction with another, scam I’m going to report. It obviously wasn’t and I lost time doing this. They were very persistent on me depositing the check, online and getting it done ASAP. Red flags went up, but it was my first time doing a mystery shop.
