An interested buyer for furniture I had on sale on Craigslist requested to send me a check rather than deal in cash. The buyer claimed to be from out of town and had recently purchased a number of pieces of furniture off Craigslist in my area. He was going to have a shipper come pick up all of his purchased items on one day. The instructions were to deposit my check immediately, keep an extra $50 for my troubles, and take the remaining amount and wire it to the shipper. All communications were via text. No phone calls were made. He provided a name, but I have no I idea if it really was his real name. The check was sent via priority mail with an "official looking" check inside.

The scammer is hoping that I will deposit the check and with my own money send a large amount of money to the shipper. The check probably is bad and would eventually bounce, making me responsible for covering these shipping costs. The "shipper" would have simply walked away with my money and would never pick up my furniture.

Bottom line: Sell local, deal face to face, and use cash only.
