FRAUDULENT CHARGES REPORT

05/22/17

A reservation was made through Airbnb under the account of one of our freelance producers, Jana Díaz Juhl, for an apartment in downtown Los Angeles -dates of May 29th 2017 to June 3rd 2017. The listing is not longer available, but everything seemed normal, price was on the range of similar apartments and had mostly complimentary reviews. The property was booked on a different card (please find attached receipt and itinerary)

The address listed, S. Olive St., was incomplete but because Airbnb is sensible to releasing private addresses, producer thought full address would be provided with check in instructions a few days earlier than check in date, as customary. There was a phone number for the host, Samantha, and when called she informed that meeting point was 1111 S. Grand Ave. 90015 and that the property was around the corner, what made sense as that area has apartments all around the block.

On May 18th producer received a message stating that the reservation was cancelled. In which case Airbn gives you the option or get credit or a refund.

At the same time, an unidentified phone number, 858.939.9901, got in contact with producer via text. The person´s name was Matt.

After that, producer received an email with a page to book (attached as Premier Property first inquiry). The email included a link to a web that listed multiple properties, all with swimmingpools and mostly in downtown and Hollywood. When producer noted there was no address or anything else linking the booking to the specific property she had reserved and that the picture included was a general downtown picture, another email was sent (Premier Property Second Inquiry), this time where the picture was matching the one of the property reserved through Airbnb. That email was followed by a third one (attached) that included a link to book from a listing. The listing, that included pictures, rental contract and details was for a different apartment that the one booked from Airbnb but was essentially the same lay down and almost identical furniture, and “Matt” clarified it was on the same building as the one originally booked. The listing was basically the same as the one on Airbnb.

Because most of the Airbnb lists in downtown Los Angeles are indeed managed by real state companies, producer was not surprise by being directed to book through a web and she went ahead and requested a refund for the Airbnb and booked through Premier Properties website on Monday May 22nd 2017 (both docs attached).

On Wednesday 24th, producer was alarmed when she tried to contact “Matt” to request an early check in and realized the phone was no longer active. The phone listed on the Airbnb for the host, Samantha, was going to voicemail and revealed to be a google phone number. All Airbnb hosts have a public profile, but hers was gone.

She pulled her reservation to go to the website and look for a Premier Property phone number but the web had also disappeared. On the bottom of the reservation there is a message staying “powered my vr” that took her to this website, that seems to be a place to create templates to list vacation rentals. At this point, producer notified us that she believed we had been subjected to a scam.
