Decided for some stupid reason to call back number that called my cell. I think they answered "Treasury" and I asked why they had called. They asked my name, I think, and I gave it to them but didn't spell it, thinking that if I didn't tell them my name, they wouldn't be able to figure out what it was about. (Of course, they had my number and had called me.) Said I was being charged with tax fraud, case# CH76295, CP503 notice, that it was a violation of tax regs, 633IH (or 1H) Count 10, theft by deception, not filed or paid on time, since I had not responded to their inquiries. They "decided to put me on their radar" for unpaid back taxes, all my assets had been or were to be seized. My payment options had been suspended, if I lost the case I might have to pay as much as $75,000 on top of the initial alleged fraud amount. I had no right to have my CPA involved anymore, needed a criminal attorney. No longer had rights for a payment plan. After the call the arrest warrant would be activated and I would have to go to jail for 3 days (or something like that). I was shaking and terrified and said I had paid my taxes and they said something like it was not about not paying taxes, it was about fraud. (????) They mentioned the years 2010-2015. They called it a "major error". Then, when I was about to collapse in fear, they said there might be a way to rectify things. Did I want to be put in touch with their restitution department? I then asked how I can know they are really the IRS. They then said, okay, we will just proceed as described. So I said, okay, and they put me through. But I hung up before anyone answered and called my accountant and attorney, both of whom thought it had to be a scam. Reported to IRS and FTC. I have had an ongoing misunderstanding with IRS thinking I owed some back taxes for some alleged unreported payroll that we have repeatedly responded to in which they were mistaken. But that was why I gave it a bit of credibility.
