I called the phone number for Pro Chimney Sweeping (I was drawn to them by their website and they said they would inspect for mold). I called on 10/31/24 and made an appointment with them for 11/5. I was going to call other companies and get other quotes and potentially cancel with them. The following morning 11/1/24 I got multiple calls and then a text saying they were at my property (it is still being renovated). My first red flag was them showing up so many days early. My father showed up and could let him in. I agreed to services over the phone and couldn't see him. He was very pushy and said he was there and I felt bad and agreed for him to "inspect" the chimney. 2 minutes later he called back and said it would cost $600 for deep clean and $600 for a chimney cap. I thought that was very expensive. He said he would discount to $1000. I felt pressured and I didn't have a chance to do research because they unexpectedly showed up. I said I'll leave my house and be there in 30. He was finished with everything in 20 minutes. I found out later he just put a vacuum up there and went outside and talked on the phone. On my way over I called this "business" multiple times and they couldn't verify he was their employee. This was my next red flag. I get there and see he is not in a work van, uniform, and then he says to write the check to him. I called the "business" again and he said it's okay write it to them. I felt stuck he already "cleaned" and put the cap on. I googled and showed him chimney caps on average are $60 at Home Depot. He realized I was on to him and he left quickly with my check. After I realized the name on his text was different than the name he shared. Then the "manager" who called, his name was different then what it shows on the phone. After all of these red flags I realized this company is a hoax. I stopped my check with my bank after I realized I had been taken advantage of. (That's why I didn't say I lost money). My police officer friend looked up the phone numbers (on what I think is a public website) I had and she said it sounded like a gypsy ring (especially with the name he gave me in person). On 11/5 the "contractor" called and yelled at my dad, threatened to sue, we offered his chimney cap back. He hung up. One person from the "company" left me a voicemail on 11/6 and that was the last time I heard from them. I changed my checking account and recently installed cameras at my property because he knew it was vacant. His version of an inspection was pointing his flashlight from his phone. If I knew any of this (because I wasn't in person) I would have told him to leave. The guy strategically told me all the prices and details without my dad hearing. Everyone used different names and I could never get straight answers from anyone I called from this "company." I'm sharing because I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Thank you.
