In late November 2023, I encountered Laura Marks, a psychic, at the Topanga vintage flea market. Initially attracted to her services for a seemingly modest fee of $25. This encounter quickly escalated into a series of events where I was told I needed various cleansings and protections for myself and my family, for which the costs dramatically increased over time. Despite my initial hesitation, I was persuaded by the urgency and gravity of the predictions made about my family's well-being and my financial stability. Over the course of less than a month, I found myself paying over $30,000, driven by a mix of fear, hope, and the promise of these issues being resolved.

My journey began with a basic reading, after which Laura insisted on the necessity of a cleansing session priced at $400. Trusting her expertise, I complied, hoping for positive outcomes. However, this session was merely the beginning of an escalating series of demands for money based on increasingly dire predictions about my and my family's well-being.

Laura claimed I was afflicted by multiple "evil eyes," posing imminent threats to my mother's health, my brother's sobriety, and my personal financial and business stability. She asserted that a substantial additional payment was essential to avert these calamities. Her tactics were persuasive and preyed on my vulnerabilities, convincing me to prioritize these payments over my financial health.

The financial demands rapidly increased, with Laura asserting each payment was the last. Yet, each resolution was followed by a new, more expensive crisis. By mid-December, I had paid more than $15,000, Laura's insistence on the urgency and necessity of these payments, despite my clear financial distress and the emotional toll it was taking, was relentless.

The culmination of these events was a request for an additional $16,000 which I paid, then followed by a final demand for $6,500 more, which I could not fulfill. In a desperate bid to settle my perceived debt, I offered a Gucci purse, a personal item of significant sentimental value, as a last resort.

Reflecting on this experience, I am left with profound disappointment and financial ruin. The promises of resolution and protection were never fulfilled, and the cost to me extended far beyond the financial. The psychological impact of being manipulated into such fear and desperation has been deeply damaging.

I share my story in the hope that it will serve as a cautionary tale for others. It's crucial to approach such services with skepticism and to seek support when faced with demands that seem designed to exploit financial and emotional vulnerability. My experience underlines the importance of regulatory scrutiny for services that have the potential to harm consumers in profound ways.

I first met with Laura Marks on October 17, 2023, while I was in a vulnerable state needing clarity, so I did a $100 tarot reading. It was rushed, and she told me I immediately needed chakra cleansing or I would never seek my goals and become happy. She told me it would be $730 upfront. I told her I did not have that kind of money since I am only 19, unemployed, and a college student. She told me she could reduce it to $550 and that I would make up the money anyway since I am a nursing major. She kept insisting and implying that I needed it. She would say, "Shut up and listen to me," or "Do you want help or not". I paid her the initial $100 and another $100 for a deposit towards the cleansing. I returned the next day to get started, and she said, "I thought we agreed to $600" I paid her $150 in cash and the rest on my credit card. She then charged my card $350, making the cleansing $650. That is $150 more than what was first agreed on. Given my age, I told her my mom watches my spending on our joint account and that I was very scared about how much I was spending. She told me I would never "break my routine" and "become independent" if I didn't remove her from my account. She would say, "Who cares if you'll get yelled at" and "If she doesn't like that, then move out" I thought this was really insane. She asked me if I had any other money, and I said I had cash in a safe box that I kept at my sister's house away from my mom. She told me that day to go drive to her house, pick it up, and drive back to Laura's house. She told me she would calculate my total from the cash and to keep it with her. We even counted the money together, which was $2000. She said, "This minus the $250 you gave me." That did not make sense. I left very anxious but continued seeing her for my cleansing since I had already spent so much. Each day, she would push me to go to my bank and remove my mom from my account, insisting that my mom was the reason why I was unhappy and stuck. As I was leaving, she asked for $500 more. I asked, "What happened to the $2000 I gave you?" She said, "That wasn't your total." I stared at her and then left. I texted her, saying I could not see her anymore because it was becoming too expensive. I feel very used and taken advantage of. She is altering her reviews on yelp and google because I saw a review saying she's a scammer, but it was deleted.
