Type of a scam Moving
I went online to get some estimates on moving. I am moving from Ohio to California, and I was trying to work within my budget. I started receiving emails and phone calls after I gave that information. I was initially going to go with a broker, but I was approached by another business who happened to call me. His name was James, and he told me that going with a broker is a bad move. He assured me that he was a legit moving company, based out of Thornton, Illinois. He claimed to have hubs all over the US; linking me to the company website. The website had the ScamPulse.com accreditation; along with various positive reviews. But as an artist myself, the website was basic. But after hearing his estimate, I was intrigued. The estimate was $1898.52, with my move being scheduled for Nov. 1st, 2016.
The estimate was based on my personal belongings. I didn't have much to move, so he based his estimate on the smallest cubic feet space required for the move. He included some discounts that got me to $1898.52. But he requested for me to pay a $100 deposit for locking in the rate and moving date. My moving date wasn't until the beginning of November.
I gave him my debit card information to pay that $100 deposit. After he "locked in" the moving rate and date, he told me how the payment plan works. He stated that I would have to pay him in three payments. Pay $474 as soon as I sign the contract. Then, another payment when they pick up my things. And the final payment when they deliver. He asked me over the phone if I wanted to sign with him. I initially agreed to use his service as my mover. He followed that verbal agreement with an email that had the actual contract. Even though he already has my debit card information; he assured me that he is not authorized to run that $474.00 payment until I signed that contract. Now the way he wanted me to sign and deliver it back to him was the red flag. He told me I could email, or fax it back to him. But he then gave me this option:
"What we also allow people to do is sign the contract, and then take a picture of it with their phone. Then text that pic to us."
Right there; after he said that, I stopped. I realized that something wasn't right. So I told him that I would need a few days to look it over. Immediately, after I said that; he started to question why I wouldn't sign right then and there. After calmly telling him why, he gave me a few days to look it over. So I took that time to go online and review signs of scams from moving companies. Asking for money upfront; harassing me about signing right away. And low balling the total cost of a move were all signs. And I found out that most legit moving companies were only a couple hundred dollars more than him. Plus they would have more trucks, drivers and offered insurance.
After my research, I called James back. I wanted to make sure he never knew I was onto him so I told him that I was still considering him; but I was going to get estimates from a few other companies. That is when he became belligerent. He became defensive and started asking me: "Who got to you? I don't understand. You were ready to sign. I'm just realy confused right now. I feel like you are using the information about brokers against me. I told you about them, and now you want to second guess me? Why are you so indecisive? You are in your own head man." He called me ridiculous, and kept asking me who got to me and made me reconsider. Even though, the entire time I am remaining calm and just notifying him that I wanted to seek a few more estimates to compare.
He wouldn't accept that because he wanted me to sign with him. So, he tried to flip it and make it seem like I was bad business. "You know what, I don't think I am comfortable with having you as a client. I'm going to cancel you because you are just too indecisive." I got tired of his rudeness so I told him he was being unprofessional and to go ahead and cancel. "Sure thing buddy, have a good day!" Then he hung up. .
All of that happened from the 6th of October to the 10th.
I happened to check my account on October 12th and noticed that that $474.00 was taken out of my account. But the company who charged my account wasn't Public Moving and Storage. On my account, the name is Moving National Solutions. When I called the number linked to the charge on my account, the name of the company was US Relocation Solutions. When I would call James from Public Storage, he would pick up right away and greet me. Now when I call him with the same number, I am redirected to US Relocation Solutions.
