Type of a scam Online Purchase
This raised red flags, but puppy love had already set-in, and we acquiesced. Arrangements were then made to ship the puppy to us the next day. We were excited. The next day we received notice from the "owner" that he had taken the dog to the shipping site, paid the transport costs & we would be hearing from the shipping company shortly. That afternoon we received a text & an attachment with all the shipping information, including the undisclosed requirement that we had to purchase or rent a temperature controlled carrier for the dog in addition to the one the dog was already in. They couldn't ship the dog until this was done.
The rental of the carrier was exorbitant, but they assured (in writing) that we would receive 90% of the rental fee back when our dog was delivered to us. Again, red flags. We called the "owner", who assured us he had been caught off-guard by these new fees, but since we would get 90% of the fees back, that we should go ahead and follow through. Puppy love was still in full-bloom, and so we sent the requested money - credit cards were not accepted, so we were instructed to send the money via One Vanilla Visa pre-paid cards. The shipping "agent" texted us saying they wouldn't be able to get the puppy our until the next morning.
At this juncture it was clear that we were being scammed. Sure enough, mid-morning of the next day we received another text, followed by calls informing us that the puppy would have to be insured with health insurance before boarding the plane, and the cost of the insurance was off the charts. We informed the "agent" that the airlines had informed us that no such requirement existed. He insisted that this was new to them too, but necessary to proceed with delivery. We then asked that he send us a picture of the puppy standing next to the new carrier, and that until we received that, we would not go forward with the transaction.
He did not send us the picture we requested, but did ask that we send the money asap. We told him it would have to wait until the next day because the bank had closed. His response was, "OK". We made several additional requests for information, none of which was forthcoming. We left messages for the "owner", his "assistant", and the shipping "agent" via phone and text asking for them to contact us. Finally, we left one last message, letting them know that their failure to respond to our communications left us no option but to contact the proper authorities. It's embarrassing to be scammed, and financially it's painful, but it's a reminder of how vigilant we have to be in a world that is filled with predators and worse.
