I'll copy and paste what I just emailed to my local news station currently doing a story over this: I was in NYC when the story aired last week about the fake online job scams. Fortunately, my mother watches the news 24/7 and called me as I was hoofing it to the Lexington Ave train station to inform me of the story AND that I had received a check for $4k in the mail via Fedex from Quidel—aka another scammer (or scam-ee, perhaps..) that tried hard to get me but I’m no sucker. However, it was fun documenting the process and playing along. Initially I did think it was somewhat legit, but once they said the interview could be on Labor Day and via some unknown chat app (and with this bot sporting a profile picture of some cheesing Bulgarian teenager circa 1998’s grainy stock photo catalog from AOL) I knew something was off. Alas, the chat deleted most of the interview but it was just beyond boring and basic interview questions that make you wanna stab your eye out. Also the grammar and punctuation was way off…definitely indicative of a piss poor con artist that probably graduated from the Betsy Devos Charter e-School. And the check was clearly a fake even though I’m half tempted to cash it at Walmart or something just to see if A) they would cash it without my actual signature or bank account, B) how Quidel would respond to me “accidentally getting robbed of aforementioned cash in the parking lot” since I’m sure they expect me to send it somewhere or buy the bogus equipment listed if it were cashed, and/or C) just to say I followed their directions ‘til the end right before I snitched on them to every agency that gives a damn. Anyway, I’m lucky and thankful because I already have a full-time job with the state so I’m not unemployed nor have I lost any money, just time, but it’s been entertaining and I’m just curious if these “HR people” are actual humans being compromised by some weirdo pretending to be them for the sake of a scam or if the entire corp/staff/etc is one big scam and they’re just semi-decent at painting the whole image online with the website, Linkedin, etc… I’d love someone’s thoughts! Or an attorney who’d be willing to challenge them (or at least the real Quidel) with me for the sake of an expose and a chance at some funds to pay off my student loans. I mean, my first thought was, “$4k in dirty funds could send me AND a friend to the Maldives...(before jail).” However, $400k in settlement funds for the “anguish, suffering, and illegal mistreatment endured” could send me, a friend, and 10 more friends to the Maldives (and no jail!) with the right sleuth/legal eagle. *le sigh* I can send you guys all the documents/screenshots if you’re interested. This form doesn’t allow me to attach docs but I’m always available on email/text (786-719-5800). If not, I get it, old news by now, but maybe getting the word out will save one person from actual heartbreak or bankruptcy.
