Type of a scam Rental
Valley office of Enterprise Car Rental and spoke to a man who identified himself as ‘Ethan’. (A man with a heavy East Indian accent.)’
I was interested in renting a car for Saturday, 9/16 – Tuesday 9/19. ‘Ethan’ said there was a Senior Special Offer with American Express of which I might take advantage. (I had NOT told him I was a senior.)
He said that I would have to pay with one of 3 prepaid gift cards (American Express Gold Gift card, and 2 others which I cannot recall right now), which I could purchase at a CVS, Safeway or almost any retail store
With a refundable $250 deposit, if I paid with any of these cards, I could pay for the car for $24 per day rather than $29.
I purchased an American Express Gold Gift card from my local Safeway and came back home to call ‘his direct number’ (855-780-2757) in order to finish the purchase,
It was arranged to me to be delivered a car by 8:30 or 9 the next day, Saturday, 9/16 when I gave him the gift card #, the expiration date and security #. He told me to save the paperwork to show the driver, along with my Driver’s License. (He did NOT give me a rental confirmation number and I did not remember to ask him!)
The next day, Saturday, 9/16, when the car was not there by 9:30, I began to call the Rainier Valley office. The call did not go thru and my phone kept registering that the call could not go through: “User Busy”.
Finally, at about 9:50, I tried the main Enterprise number and got a man (Unfortunately I have forgotten who and from where.)
After I told him my situation, he tried to help me. First, he asked if I had gotten a confirmation number (No!) and then, by looking up the office, found that the RV office was closed on weekends and that a car could not be delivered.
We both agreed that it seemed I had been ‘scammed’ and he recommended that I contact Enterprise and someone about fraud.
I called Capital One, my credit card company, and the card I used to purchase the Gift card and registered a dispute.
