Type of a scam Debt Collections
Caller claimed that I was being automatically renewed on several magazine subscriptions that I had made an
'introductory' payment of $12+ on back in 2010 with my Mastercard. They were calling to tell me that they would stop the automatic renewal, but since I had not answered a notification they sent me requiring that I either renew or cancel (I read my mail -- can honestly say that I don't recall receiving anything like that because I certainly would have cancelled).
Today's call required since I had not responded to that letter - and they could not tell me when it was sent -- that now I had to cancel the automatic renewal, but because they had gone ahead and paid for magazines that I paid an introductory fee on (they could not tell me what magazines they are; that the magazines are "encoded" so all they see is that I would have to pay 20 monthly payments of $49.95. They saw that my Mastercard was an old card and not updated so that they would need a new card number or another card for payment.
When I told them that I wanted to speak with a superior, they said they could send me to their disputes department, but that the disputes department couldn't help me -- my dispute would "just lay there."
I told them to send me a bill; they were very aggressive, asked me how old I am, what I do for a living, other seemingly irrelevant questions, I asked them what these questions had to do with the issue of this 'bill'. They could not/would not answer except to get very aggressive and nasty.
Who are these people? I have magazines coming in but I know that they were free magazines offered as rewards through Amazon, or BizRate.
Can you investigate?
