On August 2, Steve dropped a Regency Masonry card off at my house and offered to get a ladder up next to my chimney to see why there were weeds showing up in some of the mortar; he came down with some shingle pieces, saying some of them needed replacing, and he could do the job for $400, to which I agreed. The next day, he came with his partner, John, who climbed back up and pulled a few loose bricks out of the chimney. Now it was an urgent chimney repair job, much more expensive. They needed $10,000 cash to hire workers and get materials. Only receipt I got was a two-sentence email; asked for a real receipt and was told they'd get that to me. The next day, they claimed to have found that part of the chimney had collapsed, making it an even more expensive job. They needed two $10,000 checks (made out to Natalio Eligio Cuevas) to get going on it, but it was likely to cost upwards of $50,000 in the end. Again, I requested receipts and was promised I would get them. At this point, I started (too late!) doing some research and found that $50,000 was way out of line for such a job ($30,000 was somewhat plausible, as this is a two-story house with full-height attic and a chimney rising over the peak). Meanwhile the workers had started drifting away, the last one leaving just after noon. I tried putting a stop payment on the checks, but they had already been cashed. The next day, a couple of workers showed up, but left without doing any work. An hour later, Steve showed up and said they weren't going to do anything that day due to the likelihood of rain. I told him I wasn't happy about the large estimate, the lack of receipts, and the disappearance of workers, and that I had contacted another contractor for an second estimate. He said he'd be back later that afternoon to hear about the estimate; that was the last I saw of him or any of his cohort.

I requested a quote via google asking for masonry work in my area. Regency Masonry is one of the companies which came out to give me a quote. They came out and made a quote. I chose them to do the work. I contacted them letting them know we would like them to do the work, but I said I needed a written invoice showing job description and the tax amount being charged. They provided this for me and told me the job would be starting on August 14th, 2023, so they would need the money by Friday, August 10th, 2023. I told them I wouldn't pay for the whole job until it was completed but I would give them a deposit. They requested a deposit for $4500.00, which I paid with a Cashier's Check. They asked that the check be made out to Natalio Eligio Cuevas and I was told Natalio would come to the house to pick up the check. When Natalio came to the house I had him sign the check stub to show that he had received the check. John, who was the person that provided me with the invoice and had been emailing me, told me the job would start on August 14th and take 2-3 days to complete. When no one showed up for the job on the 14th, I was informed via text that John had made a mistake on the date and the job would not be starting until the 21st of August. When no one showed up for the job on the 21st I made contact again via text asking when someone would be coming to start the project. At that time, they informed me they were having issues with their van, and they would keep me informed as to when they would be coming out. I contacted them again via text asking for an update about their van and I was informed that the engine needed replacing and it would be about a week. Knowing how long it can take to get an engine and get it installed I gave them some leeway. I contacted them again via email on August 28th, August 31st and September 5th with no response back. I tried calling the phone number on the invoice a couple times, but the calls would not go through. Then I went online today to pull up the company again but what I found was a comment that they were probably a scam and had scammed another person on September 5th and it let me connect to this ScamPulse.com site. As yet I have not filed a police report, but it looks like that will probably be my next step.
