I found the site on facebook, Healthy Rescue Dogs For Adoption, and clicked on the link on or about Friday, November 15th to inquire about adoption and was told they had a 8 week old Maltioo available for adoption named Maya for $350. My spouse and I requested to see Maya in person and were told they only allow visits on Wednesdays. We were told Maya was Vet checked, healthy and up to date on her shots. We then verbally mentioned we wanted to adopt her, but would not be able physically have her until Sunday, December 1st. We were getting ready to travel for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Since it would be about two weeks to complete the adoption, we were told we would need to leave a deposit of $150 to hold her as there was a lot of interest in Maya. We agreed and made a deposit via Venmo to Kaytana Childs of $150 for the deposit. After receipt was confirmed we were told they would deliver Maya on Sunday, December 1st after 12:00 p.m. Upon returning from the holiday, we reached out on December 1st at 11:30 via messenger to confirm the delivery and provide an address for delivery. At that time there was no response, so we reached out again at 12:30 and finally received a message around 1:00 p.m. indicating that they were at the Vet with Maya and there were a few complications that were just discovered and that the puppy needed about five (5) additional shots totaling $200. They claimed to be at the Vet and did not have the money to pay and were requesting that we pay the $200 via Venmo. We then said we would come to pick her up (still hoping there was a dog for adoption). We were now leaning toward this being a scam as we were initially told she was Vet checked and up to date with shots/vaccines. We then asked for a refund since the original agreement terms had changed. We were told they could not make the refund as they were at the Vet with Maya, but would begin prepping her for pick-up as soon as we made the $200 payment for her shots. At that time they provided this address for pick-up: *** Thorndike Street, Cambridge, MA 02141 and stated that we should start driving to that address as soon as we send payment. We were pretty sure this was part of the scam and told them we only had cash and would pay our balance which was also the amount they indicated they needed for the Vet when we arrived in Cambridge, MA for pick-up. Their next response request was that we get an apple gift card and send them a photo of the front and back of the gift card. We then stopped responding as our worst nightmare had been confirmed. Ultimately, I would love a refund, but I am hoping you can look into these scammers and stop them from stealing from other people.
