Free Piano Scam

FB post under the name Charlotte Norman location said Pittsfield, Ma. Free piano, FB message was sent inquiring if available. FB message give contact information for first name only Kathy +1 (215) 395-1418. Made contact with Kathy, she was detailed in her response. She asked for my full name in order to receive the mover’s contact information along with the reference number to the free piano. I messaged the number provided for Elvin (Mitchell) but she only gave me his first name. He supposedly was from Richie Movers and sent an invoice with payment request. Some time later I received that email. I started searching for the website be couldn’t come across one immediately and then there it was in between the beginning of the search page on Google. I looked at the page and noticed that form of payment was not on the site. However, in the email I was informed to pay via Zelle: [email protected]

Which I thought was weird because the name wasn’t the person that was texting me. I asked Elvin a couple questions via text and he responded. Then he provided another platform to use instead of Zelle. Cash app was an option for Elvin Mitchell +1 (516) 218-7674, Cash app: $Lmost, payment was made and an email with tracking information. Delivery was supposedly setup for Wednesday the 22nd at 12 noon. There were messages sent back and forth in regards to the free piano. On Wednesday 23rd, I received a message saying that the parcel is being held because it didn’t have insurance for the parcel to be delivered. It also said that I was going to receive an email with the details. I received the email. I asked way wasn’t this mentioned on Monday when delivery was being arranged. I received a response stating that it would be refundable at time of delivery. How would it be refunded? They said the same platform used will be the one used for refund. I made the payment. Then I was told that delivery would be on Thursday at 12pm or will you be home at 7pm. I asked which day for the 7pm. I was told Wednesday, I said yes I would be. Then I received a message at 6pm saying that it would have to be the next day at 10am. Thursday came and 10am passed me by then at 10:54am I got a message that the delivery team is on the way, just a little delay. That was the last message from +1 (516) 218-7674. No, further contact via text or email. I sent a final message asking: What time is the delivery team expected to arrive?, this was at 2:38pm.

They approached a reputable continuing education program about a free upright piano. The story was that the owner's wife had passed away and it was her piano. He was down sizing and wanted to dispose of the piano. The school approached my piano teacher who then suggested I reach for the owner and acquire the piano. I spoke to the alleged owner of the piano who told me the piano was with Richie Movers and gave me the movers contact. I contacted the movers who asked me to pay for the moving service. I paid them through PayPal - it was a person's name and not a business name. That should have tipped me off, but I didn't think about it at that time. Subsequently the movers sent me an email saying that US Customs had stopped the "package" as they had found gold coins in the piano. The movers suggested I contact the owner to get it resolved. I contacted the owner and politely declined the piano. And immediately informed the movers that I wanted a refund. The owner subsequently sent me a long email with a song and dance story about how he was dying and wanted me to take the gold coins and distribute it to charity. That's when I realized I had been scammed. Initially, Richie Movers stayed in touch with me and said they would refund me the money in 5 business days. So I assumed that the scammer was the piano owner. But since then Richie Movers has refused to respond to my calls and emails. So I'm assuming they are also a part of the scam.
