I lost my car key while camping in the smokey mountains, and googled AAA and clicked on the first link available and called the attached phone number+1 (888) 636-6112. I spoke on the phone for 14 minutes to a man with a southeast asian accent who explained to me that it would be 350 for a roadside assistance agent to come out with a replacement key, broken up into 3 payments (one upfront, one upon arrival and one on completion). They asked me for my credit card details, billing address, email and social security number. Due to the high stress of the situation (being stranded 1,000 away from home with no car) my judgement was clouded and I gave all the information willingly, and was charged $100 to my card. About 4 hours later and still no assistance, I called the number again and it was not active, and became suspicious. I went to the national park ranger station at ******* campground in the ***** ***** National Park ( phone number +1 (**** ******** if you would like to call them and confirm and details of my story) and they googled the proper AAA and I spoke with them on the phone. AAA informed me that there was no service requests in for me, and that I likely fell victim to an impersonation scam and to contact my bank immediately.
