I was approached by a person claiming to be Carly Bechdel, Senior Manager, Talent Operations and Strategy at RubiconMD. She said they had found me on LinkedIn, and wanted to interview me. The money was good, so I agreed after checking out the company's website (which is real), their reputation on Glassdoor, real-Carly's LinkedIn page, and searched for their reputation (which was good). Then we did an interview via chat on Microsoft Teams, and because they were urgently hiring, I was "hired." Then, also on Teams, I communicated with fake Jason Katzman (there is a real person by that name), who took me through the onboarding process. Part of this was filling out a W-4 and an I-9 form, and filling out a form with my bank account number for direct deposit. I was getting nervous then, because I had no real proof that I had been hired, except an email. Well, it came time to talk about this amazing collection of equipment they were going to buy and send to me, and suddenly said they were having trouble with direct deposit. Then I became even more nervous, so I checked the BBB, and I wrote the actual company asking if they were indeed recruiting me. They emailed back almost instantly saying no, that I was a victim of a scam by people impersonating RubiconMD's real employees. I also received an email from their legal department giving me suggestions to protect myself. I blocked my bank account, notified the social security office, the US State department (because I used my passport as ID), the IDtheft.gov site, and the Swartz Creek, MI police department. I hope I avoided any real damage, and hope I can save others the same problem.
