I had received two emails, the second of which is below this message, from a fraudulent entity posing as an official sam.gov help desk. At first I did believe this to be legitimate, as we do have a DUNS number as listed below and we are required to keep it updated annually. However, I did try the number below today and actually was able to speak with someone and the male person on the other end of the line said there was a fee to process and listed $600 for one year renewal, $1,000 for a 3 year renewal, and $2,000 for a 5 year renewal, then said if we are a nonprofit, the price would be discounted to $300, $500, and $700 respectively. I stated that this was odd as we have never paid before and he created a sense of urgency that if we didn’t renew right away, we would stop receiving federal funds by allowing our registration to lapse and that these new rules just took place. I told this person I did not feel comfortable making such a quick and rash decision and my plan to verify and he said he could send a confirmation email straight from sam.gov help desk that would authenticate him as a legitimate employee. I told him I would wait for that and speak with my contacts in the meantime and we ended our call. I contacted my main contact with the State Department of Education, *** ***, who verified that this was in fact a fraudulent email and contact and that there is never any cost to renew your DUNS number.
So, I am passing this information along to you in the hopes that either the responsible person or persons can be held responsible, or at least I can scare them away from contacting me again, as *** mentioned there is a high likelihood that they will continue to contact me now that they have a contact.
I appreciate any help you can provide, I know this number does reach the fraudulent person, and am available should you need any further assistance from me. Thank you for the important work you do to ensure honest and fair business is conducted in our area and nation.
