I needed to get my chimney cleaned, so I looked online and found a company that appeared to be legit. The company showed up at the top of the list on Google and appeared to have about 50 positive ratings. Here's what the site said: "Certified and trained technicians, a thorough and impeccably clean job, a cutting-edge chimney inspection, and before and after process documentation are all provided when you choose K&L Chimney Cleaning for your chimney." I submitted my information via their website. Someone called from what sounded like a call center to set up the appointment. This was my first red flag but I went ahead and scheduled to have a tech come out. I had a busy day and was just trying to get this done. The tech showed up the following day. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but didn't have a company vehicle, uniform, or paperwork. He said he had to do an 'inspection' of the fireplace for $69 and then would let me know the cost after. After the supposed inspection the tech said the fireplace had not been cleaned in a long time and needed a substantial cleaning. He said it would cost $450. This sounded pretty high to me, and was another red flag. When he was actually doing the cleaning he was getting ash and dust all over the living room. He clearly did not know what he was doing. At that point, I just wanted to get him out of the house asap so I could call the company immediately to complain. I paid him with a check, which he asked to be made out to a *different* business name. He said it was because he was a subcontractor for the main company. More red flags! Once he was gone I called the number from the original website. The person who answered was in a call center and had no record of my call or the tech they had sent. When I asked what company he was with, he gave yet another name (not the original name from the website, and not the name that the check was made out to). When I asked more questions about the business, or to speak to a manager, the person on the phone had no answers and just said they'd have the manager call back. I tried to call the same number back again and it was more of the same. When I asked this person more questions, they hung up on me. Nobody could tell me any info about the business, where it was located, or anything. Later in the afternoon I had two people call me claiming to be 'managers.' One of them hung up on me when I asked them to clarify the business name. With the second manager, I asked for their full name and business license, and also asked them to restate the business name. This person hung up on me as well. I looked around online and it appears that this same group/company may have set up multiple websites that claim to be legit chimney cleaning services, many of them using various versions of the same site. It took me some time but I found a legit chimney sweep company, and they told me that these kinds of scams are common and a huge problem. I had no idea this was something that could happen and made the mistake of not double checking to make sure this company was real and legit. I hope that by sharing this it will help others avoid what I had to deal with.
