We have an ophthalmology (eye doctor) practice. We received a phone call from a person by the name of Alex stating he is from a company called Claim Medic. Alex was asking for a specific patients insurance stating his company was hired to ensure we have the correct insurance and make sure we bill it correctly. I explained to Alex the patient does not currently have a balance nor does she have any pending claims with insurance so nothing to review as no claims are pending. He insisted i provide him the insurance ID's for the patient even though they do not have an open claim. He faxed over a release of information sheet supposedly signed by the patient. I did not feel comfortable releasing this information to Alex so I left a voicemail for the patient. Patient called back and confirmed she has never hired anyone to do this and she has never signed a release of information sheet for them. She agreed she did not want me to provide Alex from Claim Medic the information as she has never heard of this company. Alex called back and asked for the ID's again and when I explained the patient could not confirm she hired your company he stated "she probably has alzheimers or fell and hit her head". I advised him I would not be speaking further with him unless the patient approves me to do so. He stated he would be contacting the patient. When looking up the phone number her called me from (904-990-9898) i could not find the host nor for his PO Box he provided me : PO BOX 419596 Kansas City Missouri. When asked where his office is located Alex told me he does not know. This situation made me feel as if claim Medic was praying on elderly to get their information. I am reporting as a precaution as nothing from this situation made our office or the patient comfortable.
