Found a job offer on Facebook for a remote job, contacted the person about my interest in the job. This woman named Ashley Lad was the one who posted this. I messaged her and she gave me instructions on how to get the job. It was a job for QMED PHARMACEUTICALS LTD, a UK pharmaceutical company, for a data entry clerk position $28/hour and during training week $17/hour. She told me to text a person named Sean Bilton at [email protected] on Microsoft Teams. I investigated further and found out that this company is real and it has been going on since 2015. Everything seemed well. He interviewed me through messages, which I should have know it was a red flag. Later on he told me that he talked to the hiring board of this company and I had gotten the job. He told me they were going to send me a check, which I had to deposit in my own bank account, and from there I had to buy the equipment needed for this job myself off a *specific vendor* provided to be able to start with the training week. It included things like a iPhone 15, a MacBook, a 4 in 1 printer and many softwares. Also, the way this person texted with an "okay?" or "understood?" at the end of every message kind of started to set me off since it didn't look very professional. Later on, I received the check I was promised to get this equipment with to the amount of $4,600.00, he specified that there was included $200 as my sign-in bonus. After I received the check, which was delivered by FedEX, he became very pushy. He started texting me asking me how far was I from my bank and that I should go right away to deposit this check so that I could buy this equipment on the same day that I deposit it. After his behavior, I started doubting about this. It also seemed too much money and I already had read about scams like this before. I called the bank where this check came from (Security Service Federal Credit Union) and apparently it seemed that this account to the name of WORLD ENT DBA MGT SERV AP ACCT had the sufficient founds for this transaction and that the check was real. I went to my bank, talked to a teller and he warned me that this could be a scam. This type of scam is very seen and common, people fall for it, deposit the check, spend this money on the equipment needed and then this "hiring managers" tells you to send half of this money back because apparently they sent too much. By the time you do all this, your bank still will not determine this check is clear and this amount you deposit in your account will be reflected in your account but it's actually not there. Since you already spent part of this money on this equipment (which will never be delivered) and you gave the other part back to them- the check will bounce and you are left with a negative balance around how much this check was, your bank will take the original money that was in your account already to start paying off this negative balance and then you have to end up paying the bank for the negative balance left in your account still. People end up losing their accounts (bank closes accounts for fraudulent transactions) and are not able to open another account at any other bank because most of the time the bank will think that this is money laundering and will send out an alert to other banks about it with your name included. Later on, I started getting very very doubtful about this job. I told the person "Sean Bilton" to send me the equipment himself. He agreed but I had to pay $200 for the delivery. I obviously knew by this time that this was a scam and did not deposit the check. My conclusion is that this company is actually real but this person is impersonating to be an employee from this company. Don't fall for this. All interviews (even for remote jobs) are conducted thru some type of video/phone call. Also, if you need an equipment necessary to have a remote job the company will send you this. Not a check for you to cash out and you buy this equipment off a specific vendor provided from them to you.
