Type of a scam Phishing
I must have clicked on a spoof link that I didn’t catch in my haste and worry over needing aid. I entered information on a prompt screen from the website and the next thing I knew I was getting texts from random numbers saying to click the link to claim my benefits. I also get emails from Carol at affordable housing.HUB. Telling me false information about open waiting lists.
It’s also connected to Facebook market listings for apartments or houses. I connected with two different postings. On one, I filled out their application, and sent money via PayPal that was supposedly an application fee. I sent two payments, to two different emails. And then they wanted the 600 deposit . When I said no, they asked for half. I said no, that I would give them cash for keys at the property. He agreed to pick us up the next day and take us to the property. Of course he never showed. I reported it to PayPal and flagged the listing on Facebook.
Another connection had me fill out an application and then tried to use id.me to get into my IRS account.
Luckily the facial recognition found my duplicate account. The person then asked for my username and password. I said no. Then flagged the listing and reported the number they contacted me from.
As a result, I spent a good portion of yesterday and today going through my phones settings so I could monitor tracking sites and block certain content.
It’s not perfect because they have my information. But it’s not anything Niobe can’t get by paying 30 bucks for a background check from here https://www.truthfinder.com/ I paid for a month of service because it was a trusted provider of the Fresno county sheriffs website.
I feel it’s a scam too because they only search by name and my identity has been falsely associated with people I’ve never met. And now I understand some of the strange question prospective landlords have been asking. Have you ever used another name. Nope - never been married! Have you got an eviction? Uh- nope… but there are people on my background report from this website recommended by the Fresno county sheriff that do have serious criminal activity. One is on the govt watch list and the other had a string of violent convictions and drug charges. My son, was not associated with my account at all. And they had his records comingked with another similar name from NJ.
It was my sons birth and death records, with this other guys jobs, education, and location history.
It’s reckless to do a background check by name only!!!
When I did a free background check from here https://app.betterfuture.com/login with my social security number, there weren’t any adverse records on me.
I suspect it also could be a scam site, but still , it pointed out the obvious to me. That people use my name, or what they think my name is, to look me up online. They don’t know me or my associations so they assume, it’s all me. When it is not!
Be careful out there, even if your distraught after losing your home, your car, and every precious memory you ever collected in your life, you gotta keep clear of the predators who easily without conscious take advantage of your vulnerability.
Use your full legal name on every transaction. So you are never confused to be someone you aren’t
