I received a check for $2913 in the mail with instructions to deposit the check, buy $2500 of EBay gift cards from one of 20 listed stores, scratch the silver cover off of the serial number on the cards, photograph the cards and send them to the email address listed above. I was also told to report on my experience at the store. This is obviously a scam. The check is counterfeit but looks very real. By the time you deposit the check and buy the eBay cards, the crooks have the eBay cards spent and you find out later that the check was counterfeit, putting you on the hook for the $2500.

What this scammer does is offer an incredible payout for a secret shopper. But if you’ve ever done legit secret shops, then you know the payout is small. This one offers $300 to $400 for a secret shop. They mail you a cashiers check, for a huge amount, in this case $2,950.52, along with a letter with a rediculous choice of stores and instructions. This scam wants EBay gift cards, with the largest purchase being $2,500. They want you to take pics of the cards front and back and email it to them, along with a few questions answered about the store.

If you have never done a secret shop this may seem fun and s great way to make a lot of money. But those who have secret shopped know something up with the very few questions about the shop. A true secret shop pays very little and has a very in-depth survey about the shop to be completed by the shopper. I’m attaching all the stuff that came to me. I recognized it as a scam and I hope this helps others not get scammed.

You get a letter in the mail saying you are a "secret shopper" with a $2900.00 check to go purchase $2500 in gift cards at a random store and you get to keep $400. They want you to photograph the front and back of the gift cards after you have scratched off the foil obscuring the code. They also do not want you telling the cashier you are a secret shopper since it will "ruin the evaluation".

They ask for the following information:

Once you have submitted the information they will send a request to have you purchase more gift cards - do not do this since they will withdraw the money they previously gave you ($2,900.00).
