While searching to buy football game tickets, clicked on a pop up link and immediately got a page with highly alarming "your computer is compromised" and "don't shutdown." The screen showed "the Apple help desk number to call to recover" the "frozen computer." Called the number and got a person who spoke good English but with an obvious foreign accent. Their dialog was very convincing, passing me from a "receptionist" to a "tech support expert" who was incredibly believable. They offered "life-time support and all devices" for $1950 and even sent a formal contract with e-signature functions, the whole 9 yards, after they had taken control of my computer and added their embedded software. They would not take "Discover Card" and my bank refused (initially) to accept the debit, but finally relented. They would not take USAA but did take money from Navy Federal. I finally decided I was really being scammed big time and shut down the computer (holding down the power key). I took my computer to BestBuy Geek Squad, where the computer was recovered (removed unwanted, hostile files). The GeekSquad tech even answered my phone call from the scammers while I was there and yelled at the scammers pointing out the technical absurdities that they were stating. Even then, the scammers continued for two years to call me about the "contract renewal" and continued to pretend to be legitimate. Again, their scam was so well orchestrated that even experienced and educated people can fall for it. The key is to shutdown your computer as soon as they say not to or anytime your computer screen is "frozen" or you feel you have lost control of the computer for any reason!
