I listed furniture for sale on Facebook marketplace. The scammer expressed interest in purchasing the items and wanted to use Venmo for payment. I then began receiving emails from someone claiming to be Venmo. The company wanted me to upgrade my account to business status by adding money to my available balance. I was convinced to use Zelle to send the money that would be credited to my Venmo account. While I was receiving these emails, the buyer was continuing to chat with me via Facebook messenger regarding the next steps to receive payment for the furniture. I finally contacted Venmo after I received an email threatening to involve the FBI since I wasn’t being cooperative. The Venmo representative assured me that this activity wasn’t coming from their end. When I messaged that information to the buyer, they disappeared from Facebook all together. I had already sent the money to upgrade my Venmo account through Zelle before I realized what was happening.
