A person who went by "Sherri Ann Hopper" contacted a friend of mine through Facebook in regards to an apartment for rent, as he had put an add on Facebook saying that a friend of his (i.e. me) was looking to rent one. I contacted the person directly, and they gave me photos of an apartment, an address, and told me that I would be paying a $1000 security deposit and see a $1000 monthly rent. This person used different emails for PayPal transactions and to send official-looking rental application forms. I told the person I had a Section 8 voucher, gave the person the filled out application form, $100 for the application, and an RFTA form for them to fill out. They wanted the security deposit. I gave them that. And when I demanded the RFTA form back, they refused to give it back filled out, even with a phone number provided to call them with, which they didn't pick up when called. Another friend looked into it. The apartment at the address I was given was also apparently being rented out for $1825, exceeding my Section 8 payment standard, and I confronted "Sherri Ann Hopper" about it. They started giving me excuses. And when I demanded my money back, they told me that I would have to pay a $200 termination fee for the $1000 security deposit if I wanted it back sooner than 90 days.
