He provided a contract to me through the Rocket Lawyer website posing as a mover from Affordable Movers, LLC (affmov.com) in Los Angelas, CA. The company and website were legitimate and so was the contract so I believed I was dealing with a reliable person. I also thought that if he was using Rocket Lawyer that I would be protected legally. According to Rocket Lawyer, this was not the case.
He offered a reduced cost if I paid the entire moving fee upfront. He asked for Venmo, but when the transaction didn't work, he said he was having trouble with his Venmo account and asked if I could do CashApp, Zelle, or ApplePay. I don't use any of those apps. I tried opening a CashApp account but my bank doesn't use CashApp. He said I could send payment to his wife's Venmo account. I asked him to resend the Rocket Lawyer contract with his "wife's" name on the contract and he did. Both parties signed the contract online through Rocket Lawyer. I sent the money ($820) to a woman named Rebecca Cottrell through Venmo. The money went through.
The movers never showed up and would not return my text or calls. I called Affordable Movers, LLC and they said they do not have anyone by that name that works for them and that I had been scammed. I had to rent a U-Haul that night and pack up to move by the next day with the help of my daughter. We drove 31 hours from AZ to GA.
I filed a police report with the Tempe Police, reached out to Shiply.com who has since suspended this person's account with their moving website. I contacted Venmo and have not heard back from them, I also spoke with someone from Rocket Lawyer. Rocket Lawyer will not accept responsibility for assisting a criminal with producing a "legally binding" fraudulent document through their website. They didn't require proof that this person was who he said he was. Because of the contract, I thought I was protected, but Rocket Lawyer doesn't protect anyone. So any common criminal can use their service to scam others into believing they are dealing with a reliable service provider and entering into a legally binding agreement. This makes Rocket Lawyer a valuable tool for scammers and criminals and I believe they should be held accountable.
