At the beginning of March, I received an email from a company that stated that I could sign up to be a secret shopper. I initially thought this email was coming from one of the local universities from their research department. In February, I had signed up to be a participant in any of the research projects that the university hosts and I opted for them to email me with any opportunities that they could potentially have; since I thought this was an email for the university, I carelessly responded to the email not realizing that this email DID NOT COME from the university. On March 25th, 2020, I received a cashier's check for $2,860.50 made out to me from East West Bank. The other name on the check at the bottom is: Jessica Moreno. I have no idea who this person is. The check also came with instructions on what I am supposed to do with the money. Steps: 1. Text the agent at 864-202-4905 as soon as I get this packet so that they can make the funds available to me. Then proceed to deposit the cash into my banking account. 2. Funds disbursement: after funds have been deposited, I am to use the money to pay for $50 for transportation allowance/ miscellaneous, $10 cashier check to be purchased at bank. Purchase Walmart gift cards in $500 denomination of $2500, the other $300 is for bonus (survey to be completed within 24 hours). Step 3: Bank Survey, I am to evaluate the bank by purchasing a cashier's check of $10 from my bank and make out to AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY. Step 4: Walmart Gift Cards Survey. I am to purchase Walmart store gift cards and I need to make sure I purchased the right ones by looking at the back of the card and seeing if "samsclub.com" is at the top right corner. Step 5: Evaluation Report(S) I need to make sure I take notes on the exact address and location of the bank I evaluated, the name of the cashier that attended to me, my time of arrival and departure at the bank, how long the cashier's check purchasing survey took, and the exact address and location of the Walmart evaluated. Once all steps have been done, I am to send my report to the following email: [email protected] and text 864-202-4905. I need to include my research reports, picture copy of the cashier checks purchased at my bank, and a picture copy of the Walmart gift cards and transaction receipt. At the bottom of the letter they put a reminder that I am to buy $500 x 3 cards= $1500 at the first Walmart and purchase $500 x2 cards= $1,000 at the second store. I have NOT deposited any money or contacted this individual. I did have another family member contact the phone number on their own phone to see if the number is legitimate and the person on the other end just said "Hello" no mention of a business or anything. I have searched through tons of emails to find my original email that they sent me and I cannot find it at all. I did not provide them my SSN or any account numbers, but I want the email for a peace of mind, so that I know exactly what pieces of information I shared with them. I will NOT DEPOSIT the check and I just want to know what I need to do next. Thank you.

I was originally contacted by phone and text message saying that I was accepted as a secret shopper then I received a cashier's check and instructions on what to do in the mail.
