Smith County Sheriff's Department - Imposter Reports & Reviews (1)

- Flint, TX, USA • Jul 05, 2024

Call happened 7.5.24 @ 1:30pm A middle aged man that sounded African-American, said his name was Tim Jones w/ the Smith County Sheriff's Dept. He called me from the phone number 903.243.9199. He did not sound very educated and I couldn't understand him very well, but he had my name, phone number and address. He then transferred me to his superior, a middle-aged white man with a country accent. I was told I had a warrant out for my arrest due to not showing up to a Federal Jury Summons. He claimed they had a signed for certified letter that was signed from on May 1st, and that I know had a warrant for my arrest due to showing up to the July 2nd court jury selection. He would not let me off the phone stating, "if you hang up, I will be required to have you arrested". He said that he had to stay on the phone with me until I arrived at the sheriff's dept to make sure I would not be detained if I was pulled over while driving to the office. He gave me the actual sheriff's dept. address. He put me on hold and said I had a OCL (or something like that) and he had to check with the judge to make sure he would approve me to come in and do a hand writing analysis (to prove it was not me who signed for the summons). He then said I would have to pay a bond since, but if the handwriting analysis came back it wasn't me I would receive the bond money back. The bond was $1,457.00. He then said that since the OCL was a different kind of bond they would not take my payment w/clerk, and that I needed to have a different form of payment. He instructed me that I could use a kiosk system. "They tend to have these types of systems at your local Walmart". I tried several times to get off the phone, but he was not allowing it. I finally told him he would have to be on hold for about an hour, and he said he would wait... I hung up and blocked his number. To which he immediately called me back on a second number 903.590.2661. I did not answer. No message was left, and haven't received another call.

The scammers really tried to manipulate me off of fear. I was very scared in the beginning, but noticed the red flags really quickly, but many people may not, esp. older persons.
