I saw an advertisement on Instagram for what looked like an e-commerce site based out of Toronto "Smith & Brown Toronto". The dress was really nice so I googled the company and did my best to ensure that it was a legitimate business. The dress was on sale, their return policy looked reasonable, so I took a chance and spent $72 on the dress. I figured if it didn't work it was an easy return within Canada. When the dress arrived it was in a bag with no packing slip, it had no tags on it anywhere to indicate the size or the material and care instructions. When I tried it on it was way too big and the material felt very cheap. I immediately emailed the site and asked to initiate a return. Their first email said they would let me return the item if I paid a $17.50 fee. I wrote back and pointed out that nothing in their return policy indicated a cost to return an item. The next response was asking me to measure the item and provide photographic proof that it did not fit, I refused and told them this was terrible customer service and an unacceptable solution. I just wanted to return the item for a refund. The next message offered me 15% off the item I had paid for, the message after that offered me 30% off the item I had paid for, or a gift card valued at 60% of the price of the item. When they finally did give me the option to return the dress, I was to an address in China. I was very concerned that this was a scam, and the intention was to get me to authorize more access to my credit card. I filed a dispute with my credit card, which was found to be valid and they credited me back the money. I have since found multiple negative reviews on Trust Pilot from other individuals who had similar experiences.
