Social media imposter scam Reports & Reviews (1)

- Sarasota, FL, USA • May 27, 2024

Earlier today my Instagram account was compromised, and despite many attempts to recover my control over the account it has not been successful. This was initiated from a Direct Message on Instagram through an account of a casual friend whom I casually speak with and know as my nail technician. The hacker messaged me to ask me to help them with a new influencer platform, impersonating this casual friend of mine, and asked for my phone number. I did not find this odd as I know this casual friend had been interested in branching out as an influencer and did not have my phone number, though I do not mind her having it. Upon sending the phone number I received some text messages regarding a WhatsApp account group, which I regarded as how this friend was connecting people from different phone providers/brands together (especially as I know this friend has personal ties outside of the country and may want to use WhatsApp to connect all friends for this purposes).

A few times I was able to get into the account and begin changing all information (i.e. password, 2-step authentication, recovery accounts, email addresses linked, devices linked, etc.) but was interrupted twice in this effort by the hacker regaining control somehow. Now I am completely unable to access the account whatsoever as of ~5:00pm today (May 27th, 2024). The hacker(s) have changed the email address associated with my account as well as all authentication means so I am completely unable to access the account. It got to the point where Instagram would tell me I had "no internet connection" when I would try to re-access my account (see picture) despite being fully connected to internet services. I did already verify my face through Instagram during my initial recovery efforts, though this now seems irrelevant. All necessary information is below. Apparently now my 2nd linked personal Instagram account is also compromised.

I am very concerned that this hacker will use my personal Instagram account to gain access to my business Instagram account as well as other accounts associated with my Instagram (i.e. Facebook, email, etc.). I have had many, many friends report the posts and account for your review. This person is now DM'ing my friends/followers trying to gain access to their accounts as well.
