I am a freelancer on Upwork.com, Client contacted me through there, supposedly about a job in bookkeeping. He asked if I had supplies for remote bookkeeping, like a printer, modern computer, the correct ink/paper type, etc. They asked how soon I'd be able to get one as they company needed a book keeper, now the Client was going under the name "Joe Moyer" from "Solid Wealth Financial Services" which upon a quick search looks legit. He asked for a couple pieces of information to get me started for work, just name,phone number, and address. Nothing too personal or worrisome, general information. He then said he would talk to the companies supplier to get me the proper printer and other specific items they requested I have for the job. That he would be sending me a check to pay for the supplies. First flag- but I'm a broke freelancer and cautiously optimistic. So the check was sent with 2 day shipping and arrived. Written for $1,970.00, Told me there was some extra just incase other supplies are needed.

That evening, I went to wal-mart to cash the check and load it onto a bluebird card. The woman told me the machine wouldn't take it and I should call the bank. I knew there was something up now. So the next morning I called the bank, and yup, it was a fraud check. Part of a common scheme, the scammer was hoping I'd cash it into a checking account. It was a new twist on an old scam.

Another big flag was that the business location, shipping location, and bank location, where all nowhere near each other. and the location on the label for the envelope that the check was sent to me, doesn't even exist.
