Total money lost $642.11
Type of a scam Utility
I was told on the phone I would be charged around $20. He gets there and says he has to drill through the lock to get in he says that’s 149, he says I have no other choice. Then he says he could replace the simple lock for about $199 saying it’s really good quality. He asks if I want him to install the lock, however he does not say it will be extra like before so I assume it’s part of the service fee which I thought was $149. He installs the lock and then writes me a paper receipt with the breakdown. He billed me $175 for installation which he did not mention until the receipt. Then there is a $49 service fee undisclosed beforehand. Even on the website. Then tax for $40 or so dollars.
I was shocked but also I am new to the city and assumed I perhaps might have just gotten unlucky by calling this specific person so I venmoed his business account the 642.
Now after talking with family I came to the conclusion that this was a ludicrous price for the service. So I contacted the business on the website. It directed me to a customer line that was most likely outsourced and I spoke to 3 different people. Each telling me to contact the locksmith directly “mike” as they seemed to be the middleman. I talked to mike the locksmith who serviced my apartment and he told me that the prices were company prices and he was a professional and if I had a problem contact the company. So I tried to contact the company again and was directed to the customer line. I then was contacted back from mike after talking with another customer representative. Mike said that he was told to call me. I explained again why almost $700 was an insane amount and I want to discuss a refund or the bill and he gave me excuses and said that he was fast and a professional talking over me and unwilling to conversation further on the matter he wished me luck. So needless to say I was taken advantage of and should have refused to pay before he left. I don’t understand how anyone can charge that much for a locksmith especially a service so cheap and fast it took him 20 minutes and before I could really think he had conned me into buying a new lock and installing it for $400 dollars.
