Simply put, the taxi driver did not use his meter.
He claimed traffic was heavy and we might not reach our destination in time.
(At that moment we should have sought out another taxi!) He said the fare was "likely" to be as high as $39 and the ride one hour because of heavy traffic.
I told him that Waze said it would be a 19 minute drive and that we should get moving as we did not
want to be late for the theatre.
The ride lasted almost exactly 19 minutes, he never referred to his meter or offered to provide a receipt. We paid him the
the $39 plus tip and dashed into the theatre in plenty of time to go to Will Call and get to our seats.
When we left the Theatre and headed back to our hotel, the metered taxi ride was $17 plus tip. In case SQ Taxi has a large fleet and is not a one man band: Our driver was Pakistani, spoke great English and was quite charming. The $25 rip off won't change my life, but tourists should be able to trust Taxi drivers and Uber drivers. They are supposed to use the meter unless going to the airport....
Also, I tried to Google SQ Taxi Service in Illinois and nothing comes up. No website, no contact info. They seem to be a ghost business. Their taxi "brand" may have another name, like a suburb of Chicago or something.
I am more interested in getting this driver off the road, than getting my $25 back.
Thanks,
