I got a call that our Caller ID identified as SRP, the local power company. The man said he was going to disconnect our power in 45 minutes due to an overdue account. I had to call another number (1-800-589-7150) to speak with "Eric" who gave me some story about how they had sent us a letter telling us to switch our meter to digital, that we had not responded to. Then somehow the payments we were making were not posting correctly to the bank (but the statements would show that it's fine) because of the meter problem. He offered that the letter was sent by certified mail and he could tell me who signed for it. The name he gave me was the owner, which was probably pulled from the yellow pages since the owner was not around during the time he told me the letter was signed for. When I would say how it doesn't make sense, he would just say that I could file a complaint afterwards, but our power might be cut. I was instructed to go to a payment center at Fry's to speak with customer service to do an Express Bill Pay and I was supposed to call him when I got there to make sure he could "help" me with the process. After hanging up, I called the SRP customer number from their website and reported the scam.
