He approached me in my driveway with a hard sales pitch on home renovation - I responded I knew my house needed painting but I couldn't spend a lot of money at present. He said his company could sand and paint the siding on the front and side of my house. They'd remove the old 'texture coat' with "steam sanding', smooth it all and paint it for $3000. I said ok. The next morning he showed up with a few others... They began work, but instead of 'steam sanding', he had one laborer scrape at the paint with a manual scraping tool. I let them work. After several hours he called me out, claiming my wood was bad and my entire house needed new siding. The wood siding they'd worked on had been hacked up, gouged with dents and splinters, but it didn't look like "bad wood". They surrounded me in a high pressure pitch of non-stop talk, 2 of them at once... one towering over me shouting in my face aggressively while the other kicked and pried at pieces of siding and even the foundation - saying my house is falling apart AS he's breaking it apart... he was exposing previously protected (altho old) foundation - prying loose whatever he could! I screamed, ordering him to stop - he eventually did, saying he'd fix it up again as part of the job. They both just kept up the shouting, trying to scare me into paying more money. I held to my position and eventually kicked them off my property by paying their laborer for his day's work. I was afraid of them and just needed them GONE. They left. But the laborer passed by later and told me the wood siding is good - it just needs to be sanded and painted. Then my suspicions were confirmed: I think they intentionally made it LOOK bad and hopeless. They first come on with a small, easy job offer, then open up your house - creating a problem so you feel vulnerable, in need of a remedy - then surround you with a barrage of such high pressure that you can't think clearly so you believe what they say - and feel dependent on them to "fix" it. When I refused to pay them $20-30k for a bigger job, they became really angry and even more aggressive, the really tall one towering over me and yelling to the point I was in fear while the other chipped away even more at the wall and foundation. I finally got them off my property and suffered no financial loss but their treatment was abusive and traumatic to me - Ive had nightmares, and have been afraid to walk in my neighborhood. They're working on some other houses in my neighborhood in Atwater Village Los Angeles, where the homes are all ~100 years old, with many older people like me, thus a perfect target. So now I'm left with a gouged up wall that I need to sand, patch and paint on my own. But I feel they need to be reported - everyone I describe this to says it sounds like a scam operation that I should report.
