My niece was contacted by email and text; her contact info is on job-hunting websites such as LinkedIn and Indeed. The scammer gave the name Sarah Green and said the hiring company was Stellate Therapeutics (website "stellatetherapeutics.org", address 101 6th Ave., New York, NY 10013, email "[email protected]"). My niece took an assessment test at https://careers.stellatetherapeutics.org/assessment, and a couple of days later, "Sarah Green" called to say my niece had the job and gave her the Employee Form Link: https://forms.office.com/r/j98dxRyGZd. She said they would send a laptop and a desk. Then she emailed my niece a check for $1,880 for software, and told her to send the money back to them using a bitcoin code on CashApp, which my niece did. The check is dated 03/21/2024 and has the following name and address: ***, and is (stamp) signed by *** Another check was also deposited to my niece's account but by then a friend had told her it was a scam; she informed her bank on the same day that she sent the money to the scammer. The bank terminated her account and severed her relationship to the bank. Since my niece had about $300 in the account, she lost that; the bank did not clarify whether they will try to collect on the rest. The Stellate Therapeutics website lists the names and photos of three scientists they claim are on their "Scientific Advisory Board": Géraldine Androdias, Sahar El Aidy, and Michael Spedding, who appear to be legitimate researchers when you Google them.
